Happy Holidays!...along with the week in Bootleg News...
28 Nov 2004

Welcome to this week's bootleg news here at HotWacks On-line. There continues to be quite a stream of release news out of Japan this week so let's jump right in.

Mainstream has just announced several titles as Coming Soon: BOB DYLAN "On The Way To San Jose" is a single disc version of the San Jose May, 19, 1998 soundboard; CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG "Standing Ovation" is an early Greek Theater concert from L.A. on August 26th, 1969...and then there is THE WHO "Danger! Over Head Live Wires", an audience recording from the Lyceum Theater in London during the Quadrophenia Tour on December 11, 1973.

Other DYLAN releases expected to arrive in the next couple of weeks include..."The Grand Ballroom Show" from Catch The Live, taped in San Francisco last month on October 13th...the Peace Frog Japanese CDR Label has been putting out rather superfluous titles the last few months but, their new BOB DYLAN "Just Let Her Be" takes an excellent audience tape from November 15th, 1978 at the L.A. Forum and makes it widely available. This is the kind of product the CDR Labels should focus on and it will reduce the sneering from collectors a little bit. And, I should mention that we are eagerly anticipating the arrival of Scorpio's new Dylan 6 DVD Box Set!...this one is really getting drawn out but, I have no hesitations in saying it will be worth the wait. For those wondering what I'm talking about, this project will contain EVERY known BOB DYLAN professionally shot video known to exist, and put together in a superb package with extensive notes, etc. It is said that the printing of the booklet and artwork are the hold up. This will be the next installment of their Genuine Bootleg Series. Stay tuned...

News from Trial this week brings us word on titles of note in both audio and video...a 2CD set from BILLY JOEL called "You May Be Right" features a very good audience tape from Osaka, Japan on April 20th, 1981...and on Trial DVD Masters comes CHEAP TRICK "Germany 1979", an hours' worth of Pro-shot footage from Koln on August 30th, 1979. Other DVD bootleg titles forthcoming; ELP "Hungarian Attack" is the new one from the Sirene Label, featuring 85 minutes of Pro-shot video from Budapest, Hungary on June 20th , 1997...from new name on the bootleg block, Surfer Girl Entertainment, comes BRIAN WILSON "Beautiful Dreamer", which is the cable television special on the makijng of "Smile"...with incredible footage from those vintage Beach Boys years in the mid-to-late 60's and more...in awesome digital quality. Surfer Girl is part of the Hot Stuff!/Cat's Meow family. I did have a chance to watch most of this Brian Wilson special, and all I can say is that you either love this Smile stuff, or it is complete nonsense. I certainly understand him wanting to complete this project after putting so much into it...but to describe it as "brilliant", to me is really stretching the matter. Digital Archives have a new QUEEN DVD on the way called "Live Crazy 1979", this 2DVD set will contain their Concert for Kampuchea Pro-shot footage that has been in circulation...plus footage from the Hammersmith Odeon concert 1979, promos and interviews. Sounds like a great set and we'll share more as we learn more on this one.

OK, news on the ROLLING STONES front...niche Yugoslavian boot label Risk Disc seemingly arose from the dead this week to announce a new title..."Seattle 1975", a complete audience recording from July 18th, 1975 and offered in a Limited Edition quantity of 111 copies on 2 Silver pressed discs and packaged in a "RiskPack". There is speculation that this has been speed-corrected and we are awaiting confirmation on this. The show has been previously released on the elaborate 8CD box set from RS simply called "Tour Of The Americas 75" housed with recordings from 2 of the MSG shows and Boston 6/12/75. We'll see how this one compares. I do hope the label has other projects on the horizon, they provide unique product and are a nice supplement to Rolling Stones collecting. Former VGP Label, Dogs N'Cats, has announced their next release..."Boston FleetCenter 1999" will offer collectors this ALD source (Assisted Listening Device) from March 22, 1999...though it is being advertised as soundboard. There is a difference folks. Also, Exiles' new "Opening With Security" is out now and features the No Security opener from Oakland on January 22nd, 1999...also an ALD source.

Just in to the HotWacks On-line review desk this week...NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE "Afternoon Radio" from American Fly am FM Broadcast from WBCN Boston's Radio Competition on November 22nd, 1976, labeled as the "Winners Afternoon Concert"...SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY "Sheffield Shuffle", recorded live on the Sheffield Boardwalk October 22, 2001...ERIC CLAPTON "Me & The Devil" from the European Tour 2004...this recording taken from the Festhalle in Frankfurt, Germany on April 8th, 2004 with some bonus tracks from The Fillmore East in San Francisco, the 8th & 9th of November, 1994. Also in are a trio of titles from Ganja...PJ Harvey "That Girl Can Help Yu", recorded at Le Zenith in Paris, June 30th 2004... DAVID BOWIE "Bahamas 2003"...and MUSE "Kangaroo Blues", live in Sydney on January 24th, 2004 and bonus material from Cardiff, Wales 2003. From Frog Eaters Records comes a nicely packaged version of RORY GALLAGHER "Stratosphere", that features the wonderful live soundboard from My Father's Place in Roslyn, New York on September 3rd, 1974...an interesting bonus track is tacked on to this one as well..."Leaving Town Blues" is from the Peter Green Tribute and ended up being Rory's last live appearance, described here as "Rory's Swansong". EVANESCENCE "Live And Rare" from Wind Up Records combines a 10 song set from Red Rocks Amphitheater in August 2003, along with 5 unreleased demo versions that differ from those featured on the boot "Ultra Rare Trax Vol. 2". PINK FLOYD collectors and fans of The Swingin' Pig titles will be pleased to know that the label has reissued "Atom Heart Winterland" in the beautiful and deluxed digi-pack we have been seeing from them over the last year, or so. This Floyd title is primarily made up of a nice audience tape from Winterland, San Francisco on October 21, 1970, with extensive bonus tracks from the BBC sessions on February 16th & 24th, 1970, demos, live and other BBC material.

One miscellaneous title to cite is OASIS "Little James with Stay Young and 35 other songs", a rare 3CD acoustic compilation from Flushbulb, all in soundboard quality.

Finally, we mentioned ealier in the week that Empress Valley has released LED ZEPPELIN "The Legendary Fillmore Series, Vol. 2-New York In The Wind" this weekend. The 2 disc set will feature both the January 31st, 1969 show at the Fillmore East, along with their February 1st performance as well. Also, Christmas releases have been announced from Tarantura - "Voodoo Drive Version 2004""Hannover 1980 Version 2004" both in Ltd. and #'d release quantities of 100. Akashic will have 1 new title as well..."The Smithereens" (Bombay '72 sessions) which will be released in 2 different versions, Limited to 60 #'d copies each. Tarantura is also hinting at the possibility of other new titles to be released before the end of the year. Let's hope they are worthy of even mentioning as this round of releases are less than interesting.

Thanks for stopping by. With life matters seemingly letting up, I am hoping to start a massive stretch of review posting this evening. Please visit often and keep in touch with us here at HotWacks On-line.
