A Bootleg Bust in the news...
05 Dec 2005

Yes, it's been a VERY quiet week and it had me wondering why. Then news trickles in that may explain the very reason...

It seems that there was a bootleg bust in Europe last week which targeted the manufacturer of Doberman and Watchdog titles. 'tis the season when there are usually some prominent or high profile releases that have us talking through the New Year. This latest development may have squelched any plans from other major labels and have them just ride out the wave and keep a lower profile instead. We may have to resort to just sharing our thoughts on picking the top titles of 2005 and simply enjoy what the pipeline has brought us this very bountiful past year. We'll keep an ear on things and share what we can. Simply put, relax and enjoy the holidays. These episodes come and go with regularity and people just need to be aware of that. This too shall pass and we wish our friend all the best in this latest legal setback. It's a very tricky and delicate hobby we dabble in.

It'll be short and sweet this week folks but there is some good stuff to talk about. First off, Watchtower is set to release the JIMI HENDRIX 3CD set "Newport 1969 Pop Festival" which has his set from June 20th at San Fernando State College in California with the EXPERIENCE...and the "All-Star Jam" that ensued 2 days later at the festival on June 22nd to close down the show spread over discs 2 & 3.  Hot release news out of Japan today...Wardour will be releasing QUEEN "Prime Jive", a 4CD featuring both shows from February 16th & 17th, 1981 at The Budokan in Tokyo -we assume this is audience sourced material. From Zion comes a new TOTO stereo soundboard on a 2CD set called "I'll Be There", recorded live at Le Zenith in Paris on February 4th, 1987...A very short and sweet import DVD from SKID ROW has just hit the streets and it's called "Gone Wild In Kawasaki"...the pro-shot video captures the bands' July 24th, 1989 concert in Kawasaki, Japan but the tape is only 38 minutes long!...you would think the issuing label would slap on some bonus material to make the whole project worthwhile for all but I guess that just seemed like too much work.  Heaven forbid they provide any real value with these titles!

Recapping the only other silver disc release news from the past week...Mainstream taps in to Boss-mania a bit and has the new BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND THE E STREET BAND title, "Promise Into Darkness" 2CD set ready to roll...the tape was recorded at Boston Music Hall on March 22nd, 1977 and looks to be an incomplete tape source. And last but not least, without taking breaths in-between releases...Dog N' Cat Records announced 2 more ROLLING STONES titles to continue their quest to release all the soundboard material from the 1981 Tour...first up there is "Atlanta Fox Theater 1981", a 2CD set that features what is hopefully a more atmospheric recording than some of the others as this was one of the smaller venues from the massive '81 campaign, this one from October 26th (the audience source was released by Vinyl Gang on "In The Windy City" last year)...and then there is "Twin Cities '81", a 2CD featuring what appears to be a soundboard/audience mix to provide the first commercial boot of the St. Paul Civic Center show from November 21st, 1981.

That's it for this week, quick and dirty. Do be thinking about your Top Ten Bootleg Releases for 2005 and when you are ready, submit to:
sb@hotwacks.com   I'll start posting some of them over the next 3 weeks to share with everyone and we'll just have a little fun that way. You can break them up into CD and DVD categories if you like - no real rules aside from strong encouragement to participate. Hopefully we can get a forum area posted again in 2006. Lots to look forward to in these pages in the near future. Thanks for stopping by and have a great week.
