Odds N' Sods Bootleg News...
30 Jan 2006

Speaking of oddities and loose ends!...From a CDR Label called Franny Records comes a 4-disc compilation called "The Complete Apple Singles Collection Vol. 1", which is comprised of just that - artists that recorded for THE BEATLES' Apple Records Label...from FRANK SINATRA to MARY HOPKINS, BILLY PRESTON to BADFINGER, JAMES TAYLOR to JACKIE LOMAX. In other BEATLES-related boot news, there is a single CD that has been issued on Strange Apple Records (who says bootleggers don't have a sense of humor?) and called "Hiroshima Sky Is Always Blue" and features YOKO ONO & SEAN LENNON with PAUL McCARTNEY and his family taking part in a Japanese Public Radio Broadcast to acknowledge the 50 year anniversary of the first atomic bomb being dropped on Hiroshima!  Whoa, this has got to be strange. It took place on August 6th, 1995 and the station aired YOKO ONO's new song "Hiroshima Sky Is Always Blue". Now for something reeeally BEATLES...apparently Silent Sea has released the new DVD "THE BEATLES: The Ultimate Shea Stadium At Last", which offers the show in BOTH Color and Black & White - running 83 minutes. Another Japanese Import BEATLES DVD-R, "Intervals From 1964 To 1965", documents the bands European footage during those vintage years. PRINCE fans, on the Sabotage Label there are a couple of recent issues..."Big Screen" is a CD+DVD package that has his Musicology show from L.A. on March 28, 2004, plus PRINCE and Special Guests performing at the NAACF Awards in Los Angeles as well...the DVD captures all the known video footage from these same performances. Also from Sabotage is 6CD PRINCE set called "Celebration of Musicology's Homecoming"...the collection showcases all of PRINCE's Minneapolis performances at Paisley Park Studios from June 16th through June 18th, 2004, as well as all the aftershow jams with special guests AND 3 special acoustic sets!...it comes with a cool book with detailed notes and tracklistings, very nice. There is another special DVD-R project out there that I wanted to mention...from Turning Japanese we have JIMI HENDRIX "Hold On Baby" a 3DVD-R set that compiles an incredible array of pro shot/soundboard footage of HENDRIX...gathered from private collections of those who were in the "inner circle", we have promos and 8mm & 16mm footage from excellent source tapes that include: 1965 Nashville TV!...Saville Theater Promotional Video shoot on January 31, 1967 all the way through to September 18th, 1970 ABC & CBS-TV reports and coverage of Jimi's death on U.S. television.

We told you about the new ROBERT PLANT CD & DVD video project, "Sound + Vision Special 2005", earlier in the week...the audio piece brings together several BBC appearances by PLANT w/STRANGE SENSATIONS which include performances as well as interviews, the DVD-R compiles both his British and U.S. TV appearances on "Later...with Jools Holland", Late Nite with David Letterman, The Conan O'Brian Show and more, promoting "The Mighty Rearranger". In another novel video piece provided on DVD-R, Hot Stuff has sourced an excellent version of the "Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Grand Opening Concert"...it distills the best moments of the days festivities from 1995 with performances by THE ALLMAN BROTHERS, JOHNNY CASH, GEORGE CLINTON, SOUL ASYLUM, ARETHA FRANKLIN, BON JOVI, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, GEORGE CLINTON, JERRY LEE LEWIS, SHERYL CROW, MELISSA ETHERIDGE and much more, clocking in at about 3.5 hours.  "Those Were The Days" is a new MARIANNE FAITHFUL DVD from Solenoid, providing an interesting retrospective of the former JAGGER muse spanning the years 1965-2003 and runs about 70 minutes.  The Perisco label has a relatively new QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE DVD called "Lullabies For The Paralyzed", which documents their live show at The Montreux Jazz Festival on July 2nd, 2005 and comes in a nice digipack. There is a delicious-looking new NEIL YOUNG DVD out now from Penguin titled "Decades: Imporant Moments in an Imporant Career", a collection that includes 1967 Buffalo Springfield footage on The Hollywood Palace TV show with DEAN MARTIN, Neil's London solo acoustic show in February '71, CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG from London 1974 at Wembley Stadium, with CRAZY HORSE in London & Tokyo '76, NEIL's full Live Aid set and more, all in Dolby Digital pro-shot quality...looks really great. A ROLLING STONES DVD I came across this past week is called "San Diego 1994" on the Ladybird Label and captures their Voodoo Lounge concert at Jack Murphy Stadium on October 17th, 1994 and I can only assume this is an audience sourced tape as I haven't seen this mentioned in circulation before. In some STONES boot CD news, I should also mention this 4CD set that has been released on what is being touted as "The Trademark of Quality" Label, or TMOQ, and the title is called "Live At The Hollywood Bowl"...it features both shows in L.A. on November 6th and 8th, 2005 lifted from an ALD (Assisted Listening Device) - not an actual soundboard as they advertise. I've heard these tapes and while mildly interesting, they are just so flat and lifeless that I'm not sure anybody can breathe much life into them. We'll see.  Also, Empress Valley has issued "The Rolling Stones "The Auction Reels / The Lost Sessions Vol. 2", which doesn't provide anything new in outtakes gathered from the old Scorpio Label, Time Trip Series, and in virtually the same quality. But those who would be hard-pressed to find those old compilation discs which are long out-of-print will benefit from EV's pristine presentation. Plus, it's vintage STONES and these outtakes are quite stellar.

Rounding out with the latest in Japanese Bootleg CD news...ERIC CLAPTON continues to be hot as Beano annnounced the 2CD "They Ain't The Only Ones", a nice live recording from Heidelberg, Germany on June 17th, 1977...ALSO...Tricone will release the EC title, "By Your Side" 2CD, taken from a Journeyman Tour performance in Nagoya, Japan on December 10th, 1990. A killer rarity is being offered up by Zion with the STEELY DAN stereo soundboard disc, "Mobile Home"...it documents their Paramount Northwest Theater show in Seattle on July 1st, 1974!  As always, the Japanese Professional Recordable Media titles flow endlessly...some of the more top of the line titles this week include these from Trial...JEFF BECK "Too Much To Lose", a Budokan show from December 4, 1980 on 2 discs...JETHRO TULL "Oakland 2005", IAN ANDERSON & CO. show from The Paramount Theater in Oakland last November 11th - AND, this one includes a bonus disc with BBC Sessions 1968-69 from the BBC Archives...Also from Trial is EARTH, WIND & FIRE "At Budokan" a March 26th, 1979 live recording. Finally, Power Gate sourced a new DEEP PURPLE gig from 10 days ago at The Astoria in London!...the title is called "Back To Back", recorded January 17, 2006.

That's everything pertinent we learned through the grapevine this week. Thanks for swinging by and keep and eye on the News Ticker.  Have an awesome week!
