08 Feb 2006

Hey, welcome to a mid-week edition of Recorded Highlights and Action Replays here at HotWacks On-line. The fact that you are here is reason enough to alert you to an extraordinary music collection of memorabilia and recordings featured on the web. If you haven't already heard or been there, you will not want to delay visiting Wolfgangsvault.com. The wealthy owner of the Bill Graham collection, Bill Sagan, has organized this amazing motherlode of some of the most important documents in music history. If the prices on the posters, handbills and original photography numb your brain, a 15-minute sampling of Vault Radio will completely melt it. We're talking soundboard audio from all major Bay Area (Oakland, San Francisco even Berkeley and L.A. Forum, even Toronto) performances and shows promoted by the late Bill Graham! We're talking Jefferson Airplane before they were...The Grateful Dead in the embryonic days...Led Zeppelin's first shows at both Fillmore West (opening for Country and The Fish) and Winterland (opening for Iron Butterfly). Then there is the potential of seeing some video excerpts down the road! Incredible doesn't even begin to describe what is featured. Go here and learn all about it and listen for yourself:

Wolfgang's Vault

There is also a great article at Billboard.com ("Rock Legends Emerge From Wolfgang's Vault" posted February 7th). Let's hope some of this stuff gets released in some fashion. It seems heavy negotiations have been going on with many music label executives and artists, so it will be VERY interesting - and also VERY complicated, to be sure. On with some Bootleg News...

Diving head first into some of the more recent announcements, Scorpio DVD is back with another example of labor of love...the superbly assembled THE  WHO "Purple Hearts And Power Chord" 2DVD set, which amazingly enough covers the years 1965-1969 - pretty comprehensibly!...The set essentially features everything from The German Beat Club clips to Tommy Promos with every British and American TV show appearance in between, and it includes Monterey Pop 1967 and other live snipets. When Scorpio gets into a project of this nature, it's usually quite the collector's piece and this has all the same attentive aspects of of their WHO CD compilation,"Instant Party"...which is simply wonderful.  Adventure Disc has just announced this week that it will have the SLY & THE FAMILY STONE 2DVD (+ bonus DVD-R) "My Own Beliefs" that pretty much brings together every known video footage of the band you could ever hope to assemble in one shot...Studio Promo clips, the Ed Sullivan appearances, Dick Cavett performances, Midnight Special and more...the bonus disc features the documentary piece, "Portrait Of A Legend", both the Canadian and Australian versions.  Today, the latest boot release news out of Japan brought forth info on Power Gates' new BLACK SABBATH titles..."Bringer Of Evil" delivers a stereo soundboard from the Capital Theater in Sydney, Australia on November 27th, 1980 on Disc 1 and a Harford Civic Center soundboard on Disc 2 from August 10th of 1980 - with RONNIE JAMES DIO leading the Sabs here..."Captured Alive" 1CD provides us with an IAN GILLAN-led SABBATH show, another soundboard as a matter of fact, from Worcester Centrum Centre, Worcester, Massachusetts on November 4th, 1983...on Power Gate CDR is WHITESNAKE "Rattle And Roll In Detroit" 2CDR, a February 13, 1988 audience tape. New QUEEN to relay from Wardour..."Last Show In Japan" 2CD captures a nice audience-sourced tape from the May 15th, 1985 concert at the Osaka Castle Hall on 2 Discs...certain Japanese vendors are offering a QUEEN "Rock In Rio -Complete" DVD bonus or "Free Gift" along with the purchase of Sirene's latest release, which is pretty cool...on Sirene CDR there is also URIAH HEEP "Live Fantasy" 1CDR, recorded at Guildhall in Preston, England on December 2nd, 1975 and features JOHN WETTON on Bass & Vocals, replacing GARY THAIN...also, EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER "Prog Heroes" 1CDR, live at The World Music Theater in Chicago, August 22nd, 1998. LOWELL GEORGE fans will be interested in learning that Trial DVD Masters is releasing LITTLE FEAT "London 1977", 80 minutes of proshot footage from Rainbow Theater on August 3rd, 1977.

Other New Releases over the last week...we told you about the newcomer label, Tinker Bell, who appear to be in the family of MisterClaudel and Wendy...they have 2 new DEREK & THE DOMINOS titles that will be on the market shortly..."Painer's Hill Music Fair" 2CD is a November 29, 1970 show from Owings Mill, Maryland and "Marqee Club Gig" is an August 11th, 1970 peformance ona single CD. From Seymour comes NEIL YOUNG "Madison Hurricane" 2CD + bonus DVD-R of his show at the Dane County Coliseum in Madison, Wisconsin on Novembe 14th, 1976...Devil Productions is turning to the CD format to release the 2 excellent ROLLING STONES shows at Madison Square Garden on January 18th and 20th in a 4CD set called "A Bigger Bang At The MSG 2006"...Speaking of the STONES, Apocalypse Sound has issued the DVD "Stripped 10th Anniversary Edition", the superb 1995 rockumentary of the late-leg of the Voodoo Lounge Tour with Club Shows and rehearsal footage from Tokyo, Amsterdam, Paris and London...Also from AS is a stunning VAN HALEN "Video Collection 1978-1984" that certainly appears to be the definitive collection of DAVID LEE ROTH-era VH video, then there is PINK FLOYD "Into The Vault" on AS DVD featuring studio performances and live footage 1968-1988 and the label always wraps these releases in the nicest of digipacks too!...The Godfather Records has BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN "Greetings From Trenton N.J." 3CD, capturing the final shows at Trenton's Sovereign Bank Arena on November 22nd, 2005 - it features the complete show, with all the different selections performed on the first night included on Disc 3...this source is from the same taper that provided the recordings featured on Godfather's "Keep On Dreaming" and "Straight Into Our Hearts" sets. Also from Godfather comes 2 new U2 releases which feature both of the bands' Boston shows...they are "All Shine On" 2CD (December 5th, 2005) and "Somewhere In Our Hearts" 2CD (December 4th, 2005).

Alright!...Fans of Hollow Horn's 2005 BOB DYLAN Reference Master Collection will be thrilled to learn that the label has just as much ambition for 2006! Over the next 10 months, we will see Hollow Horn's new Performing Artist collection be introduced and released on a volume-by-volume basis...there will be 7 double-CD sets in all and Volume 1 is called "Ten Million In A Week" and will concentrate on the extremely early Zimmy-period of 1958-May 1961 while Volume 2, "Like Marlon Brando" will pick up the trail from September 1961-1962...this series promises some upgraded source tapes, logical sequencing and the usual superb fold out packaging, and there will be, as in the previous Reference Recording series, be a booklet issued with one of the later volumes that will offer full track and source details and extensive sleeve notes.  Most of this material has been available on previous releases but all are long out of print and the promise of upgrades, PLUS the precedent their Reference Master series set - these should be just as collectible and worth seeking out.

Some new DVD-R titles from Solenoid that some of you may be interested in hearing about...they include ROLLING STONES "In Memory Of Brian Jones" featuring some 60's video rarities, THE PRETENDERS "Rockpalast 1981", ROY BUCHANAN "Complete Rockpalast 1985", DIRE STRAITS "Alchemy Live 1983" from the Hammersmith Odeon on July 22nd and 23rd, 1983, JACK BRUCE WITH MICK TAYLOR "Greatest Bruce Night" featuring The Old Grey Whistle Test 1975 and more...Also of note to collectors who love the Way Of The Wizard label of DVD titles...here is a new listing of 2006 titles...

Finally, some clean up notes...it appears there will be a stunning DVD upgrade to the KISS MSG video from February 18, 1977 so watch for more on that...I have been told to expect a major BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN release later in the year and that collectors should save their money, this a HUGE project both in content and volume so we look forward to details on that for sure...DGP is continuing to report progress on their TOM PETTY live anthology set and that will be interesting to get more details on as well...and the next Dog 'N Cat Records ROLLING STONES 1981 soundboard has been formally announced as "Capital Connection Vol. 1" which, as we teased earlier, is from Largo, Maryland on December 7th, 1981 with Volumes 2 &
3 coming shortly featuring the December 8th & 9th shows.

And one last comment on THE ROLLING STONES Super Bowl appearance...I lied, CHUCK LEAVELL did perform with the band so they had some reassuring accompaniment anyway!  I think we'll leave that Super Bowl thread up as people seem to feel compelled to comment, and that's great!  Thanks for stopping in to HotWacks On-line for all the news and we'll rendezvous here again next week!  Keep an eye on the Ticker.
