September 11, 2001 - We will never forget...
11 Sep 2006

Thank you for stopping in for the latest in Bootleg News here at HotWacks On-line, on this emotionally charged 5th Anniversary of the day the world changed...I don't want to get too off topic here but I hope each of you has had a quiet moment to just pause and reflect on the events of September 11th.   We need to remember what it means to be free, to be able to have hobbies and be frivolous enough to "collect".  We are indeed lucky.

Over the past week we've seen some interesting new DVD boots hit the market...The Scorpio Label issued JETHRO TULL "So Sad Is A Bed Way To Be", featuring the band live at Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts on July 7, 1970, likely a Bill Graham Archives source video tape with bonus footage from Swedish TV 1969, French TV 1970, Top Of The Pops 1970 and The Rolling Stones Rock N' Roll Circus from December 1968...also from Scorpio comes the long awaited "Lost Waltz" from THE BAND - providing collectors with an abundance of outtakes from the official "Last Waltz" Movie with performances by many, including BOB DYLAN, NEIL YOUNG, ERIC CLAPTON...this is all black & white proshot footage from a single camera position, provided to us on a convenient DVD-9 Dual Layer Disc...from the Boys Next Door Label comes an incredibly desirable DVD from THE CLASH called "Pressure Drop", a 1977 to 1985 compilation of just about every proshot/broadcast piece you can think of from the band...starting with their Elisabethan Suite appearance in Manchester '77 through to their June 29th, 1985 Rokskilde Festival set in Copenhagen with their Concert For Kampuchea 1979, Tom Snyder 1981 TV Show appearance and 1983 US Festival show smashed in-between, nearly 5 hours of footage also provided on a DVD-9 and looks great!...Another DVD I wanted to point out this week was a LEON RUSSELL title issued by Solenoid DVD-R called "Out Of The Deep Freeze - The Lost Reels", documenting his performances in Anaheim, Long Beach and the Sugar Bowl in 1972...all proshot and very scarce footage of another unique musical personality from the 70's.

In other boot news around the table..A few more ERIC CLAPTON titles surfaced this week...New from Paddington is "Complete Montevideo 1990" 3CD set that captures his October 3rd, 1990 show at Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay...from Mid-Valley comes "Lucca Night" 2CD, the radio broadcast of his July 7th, 2006 concert in Lucca, Italy....Empress Valley has released the LED ZEPPELIN 6CD set, "Bourbon Street Renegades" which will house both the previously released sounboard from New Orleans on May 17, 1973 - along with a newly shared audience "master tape" from the collection of the infamous "Mr. Freezer"...this new source was shared via the internet around the beginning of August and has been the subject of much debate due to it's suspect origins, and in less than ideal condition..the tape seems complete but has many speed problems and tape stretches that had several desktop engineers subsequently providing their own "fixed" versions via Bit Torrent download.  Though EV claims their release isn't source from the net...that isn't necessarily a positive claim!  Look for a review to appear on these HW pages very soon and we'll sort all of that out for you...Coming Soon from Empress Valley will be the ZEP title, "Live In New Zealand 1972" which, in the early teaser info boasts "a major upgrade" to the already excellent audience tape that Tarantura released back in 2001 and Akashic earlier this year...it's a great show and if there is any truth to their claim, should be a title worth snapping up.  Also out of Japan this week is the late announcement from Zion regarding their BOSTON "Hottest Band In The Galaxy" 2CD set with bonus DVD-R...the audio discs feature an excellent sounding show recorded at The Budokan in Tokyo on April 18th, 1979 and the bonus DVD contains the proshot video from Giants Stadium on June 17, 1979 and has been making the rounds... I believe Solenoid put this one out last Spring.  Thinman Records have something old and something intriguingly "new" from BOB DYLAN this week...first there is the 2CD "Like Rolling Thunder" that provides the soundboard fragment upgrades of both the Plymouth, Massachusetts and Waterbury, Connecticuit 1975 tapes...and perhaps more newsworthy is the single disc "Tell Ol' Bill Sessions" which contains some 2005 soundboard tapes of unknown origin...we certainly look to get our hands and ears on that one for review...and apparently the Satan's Call Label has released OZZY OSBOURNE "Blizzard Of Ozz: The Demo Tapes" 1CD, which is supposed to be different from the "Working Tapes" disc issued on the Blizzard Of Ozz Label a couple of months ago...ah, bootlegs...my money is on that they are the same!...If anyone can shed light on these 2 releases, do share!  We'll see if we can obtain them too.

Some more updates on recordable media releases...Sirene has put out the ASIA 4CDR set, "Fanfare For The Reunion" which brings us right up to date on that reunion "tour" that's in progress...this set pairs their August 31st show at Trump Marina Casino in Atlantic City with their Foxwoods Casino set at Mashatucket, Connecticuit on September 3rd, 2006...New  from Power Gate is WHITESNAKE "Armed And Ready" 2CDR plus bonus DVD-R, both feature their show at Festival Hall in Osaka on February 15, 1983..and, IRON MAIDEN "The Definitive Years" 6CDR set which packs 3 great sounding shows in one punch...the audience sources are from Nottingham on May 10, 1983...Sheffield on September 17, 1984 and again in Sheffield on October 16, 1986...from Trial comes THE DOOBIE BROTHERS "First Show In Japan" 2CDR, recorded live from the audience at Koseinenkin Hall in Osaka on January 11th, 1976...and JEFF BECK "Explosion In Arizona" 2CDR, capturing a beautiful audience recording from the Tempe Music Festival on March 31, 2006.

Some final other items of note...look for the 4Reel/Top Of The Line BEATLES DVD, "The Making of Sgt. Pepper" to hit the streets this week and every collector or fan of this monumental LP will want a copy of this compilation, it's a superb production - packed with content.  And based on the updates from "YouKnowWho"...the oft-mentioned mega-BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN box set (from a yet, undisclosed label)  for end of year is struggling to find a couple of low-gen sources on some certain pieces so, this may set things back if they can't be obtained...after all, we've been told that if it can't be absolutely "definitive"...it won't be at all.  I'm sure we'll be hearing more on that!

Thanks for stopping by and don't forget about the latest Hot Wacks Book Sale in progress, pick up Supplements #1 & #2 and bolster your bootleg reference library.  Have a great week!
