...As I posted last week, a new LED ZEPPELIN tape has been shared - pulled from a french closet and the original cassette transferred digitally...both Empress Valley, above with "Les Rendez-vous De Paris" and Wendy Records, below with "Centralien" (which includes bonus tracks from Kansas City on November 5, 1969) have released this new live recording from December 6, 1969!!!...It was shared via Bit Torrent sites on March 1st and now seeing commercial bootleg coverage. By all accounts its a fabulous recording of a show only rumored to exist and we thank mssr. Christophe Le Pabic for sharing this gem for the masses to absorb...here's his original story from the postings: PISTON 70 L’cole Centrale Chtenay-Malabry December 6, 1969
On a cold December night, in the suburbs of Paris, Led Zeppelin played their first gig after a month of hiatus and a successful American tour. It took place at the cole Centrale, a leading French institution located in Paris that educates engineers and managers. The school moved from Paris to the Chtenay-Malabry campus in October 1969. The Piston 70 event was to be the first show organized by the students in this new and modern place. Also on the bill were The Pretty Things, Bachdenkel and two French bands: The Variations and Triangle.
Over the years, there’s been much speculation regarding the validity of Led Zeppelin's appearance - despite a review in the French magazine Best in February 1970 and a publication of the programme in the book Hexagonal Experiences. The first clue was the photographs of the gig taken by Gilles Chteau, which were published on the Led Zeppelin.com website. A poster for the event may have also been printed, but is yet to be found.
But now, more than 40 years later, there’s no doubt that it really happened since a recording has been dig out!
It was at the Ulster Hall in Belfast ironically the venue where Led Zeppelin first played ‘Stairway to Heaven’ live that Grard who attended and taped the show in ’69, met Philippe, a music collector/archivist and webmaster of a short site about The Divine Comedy, a site dedicated to the music of Neil Hannon who played a benefit gig at the Ulster Hall that night along with Ash and The Undertones. This meeting led several months later to the discovery of the tape.
Grard fondly remembers the evening in December 1969: “The concert took place in the suburbs of Paris, it was very cold and snowing. I went there with four friends. One of them became famous later in the seventies, under the nickname of Ramon Pipin when he became the founding member of bands called Au Bonheur Des Dames and Odeurs. The musical press had announced this concert hosted by the cole Centrale, and of course we bought our tickets and I kept mine, numbered 1111. We were sitting on a kind of balcony above the stage located in the main hall of the building. This concert is one of the first I recorded. The tape remained in a box. It was not until I met Philippe that the idea of trying to do something with it came to light.
We had already seen Led Zeppelin in England and France. I must say that during the late sixties, we went very often to England and we saw many bands that would become successful and often in small venues. It’s difficult to imagine now, for example, seeing Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett playing to an audience of just 40! We’ve seen Led Zeppelin many times and the most memorable concert was the one in a pub in London. We paid 10 shillings and Led Zeppelin played for more than two hours. We were standing in front of the stage. This is one of the best concerts I’ve attended!! Led Zeppelin introduced and created a new style of music. Just like The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd or Soft Machine who developed their own personal style.”
The concert was recorded with a Philips EL-3302 tape recorder on a 120 minute cassette, and the tape has been digitized with the help of a Nakamichi DR-1 tape deck and an Edirol R-09 digital recorder. Hopefully the tape did not suffer the effects of time. Philippe who did the job comments: “I first heard about the Chtenay-Malabry show through the website of Jean-Claude Bellamy (a former Centrale student who operated as a lighting engineer that night). Having done an engineer school myself, I always remained curious to find a copy of the show, but quickly realized it was a controversial date. But I kept believing in it, and basically always asked about it when Led Zeppelin came into the discussion. I’m finally so glad that I managed to find it and was able to restore it. Nowadays, it’d likely has just been rubbishly ripped onto mp3 and shared onto a blog as if it was an evident download. A shame because such a new Led Zep find is a very big deal. I’ve spent many hours on the editing just for the sake of all the fans who hoped to hear it as well.”
