REVIEW: |
All you have to do is look at the ratings I've provided on this piece, and then glance at the Track List. This is everything you can compile in both video and audio regarding the legendary Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band LP, in the the most stellar quality. Simply a wonderful collaborative effort between 4Reel Productions and Top Of The Line DVD.
The bulk of the video material is garnered during the massive documentary efforts surrounding the ambitious Beatles Anthology Home Video release back in 1991-1992. Here, we get it directly from Japanese Satellite with a Digital Transfer to DVD. One could say it's painstakingly pieced together but the facts are, Top Of The Line had access to most of this video material already as it's included in the excellent 10 DVD Beatles Anthology Director's Cut issued 2 years ago on the Picture Perfect Label. Where the insightfulness of this release comes in, is with the superbly compiled mixes of the LP and bonus audio outtakes. They've never sounded better and it's all captured on a single Disc. That being said, I needed to revisit this glowing review to point out (thanks to a passionate member holding me in check!) the fact that both the Mono and Stereo bonus audio mixes have glaring issues at the end where the production simply chops off the last minute to 2 minutes of "A Day In The Life"! My apologies folks, missed that in my sessions giving this one a run-through.
Our passionate friend's posting in the News has been copied and edited to fit in the comments below...and it's here and now that I must step back and admit to eating a little crow for dinner. As far as the comments below on the slideshow and such - these are bonus features and yes, could have been a little better thought out but I'm not going to slam it too hard. I'm going to stick to my guns on this being a highly recommended release for the Beatles and/or Sgt. Pepper's fanatic in most of us. Though the cuts in "A Day In The Life" are truly annoying and a glaring mastering oversight! |

"Superb production"-NOT-It's pretty good...BUT-it's got MAJOR problems! BOTH the "stereo" and the "mono" mixes CUT OUT BEFORE the end of "A Day in The Life"! Right as the song is building up to a cresendo- BOOM, it STOPS! The slide shows are kinda' lame too-it could have at LEAST been timed to the music. The artwork for the covers looks really "amatureish" (looks like a download off the internet)and a back cover that's almost illegiable. I was really disappointed, and I'm a FAN! Wow! Love the passion man. Let it be said here that Svengi ate crow for dinner. I enjoyed this DVD in fragments, and didn't catch the cutoffs in "A Day In The Life" mixes-truly reprehensible! Assessing the title further, I agree that the Production could have used another Quality Assurance once-over. A great idea for a release that was a bit hastily finished off. Thank you for steering me back, I indeed should downgrade the ratings a notch. Comment by Svengi wrote on 2006-09-19 11:18:56
