REVIEW:

"A comprehensive document of the first American Tour with coverage from 24 cities. Painstakingly researched and edited, this collection gives the viewer
a realistic feel of Beatlemania in the summer of ’64.

 Selected highlights include:

  • Rare 8mm color footage from Kansas City, Los Angeles and Denver.
  • Color 16mm concert footage from Chicago. Almost five stunning minutes!
  •  Previously unreleased concert footage from Las Vegas.
  •  Previously unreleased arrival footage from San Francisco.
  • Previously unreleased footage from Vancouver, Canada.
  • Hollywood Bowl Concert: A completely re-edited/re-mastered version. Not only is the video quality greatly improved, but we have located many missing bits of footage to create the longest and best looking version to date.
  • Philadelphia Concert: Going back to the original tapes, we now have complete songs in place of previous song fragments.
  • Indiana Concert: Again, a completely re-edited/re-mastered version. Several sources have been combined to create a much longer version than previously seen.  Now includes the full version of “If I Fell.”
  • WHK Cleveland Press Conference: Longer than previously seen. Taken from archival tape, not re-broadcast.
  • Forest Hills, New York: Previously unreleased footage surrounding Ringo’s lost St. Christopher medal and its return. Paul is also seen in the footage.
  •  U.S. Departure: Previously unseen outside interview and plane departure also includes raw footage from the return to Heathrow Airport.
  •  BONUS TRACKS: Previously concealed footage of “I Should Have Known Better” from Granada TV’s Scene at 6:30. Contains both dress rehearsal and complete performance!"

The above pre-release information perfectly sets the stage for this double-DVD set.  First of all, the set is aptly titled.  For indeed, you are right in the middle of the circus, the frenzy - the "Eye Of The Hurricane".  I have never seen most of this footage and to soak it up in such perfect quality, it's just absolutely stunning.  Secondly, you are taken on that 1964 tour of the States chronologically -with every available piece of footage from each stop painstakingly sourced to the master tape and chronicled here for us all.  Amazing.

If you are a Beatle fan and seeing all this old Beatlemania comes to the U.S. footage makes you smile, get ready for a permanent grin.  As I prefaced in earlier comments on the HotWacks site here, this IS the real deal.  It is first-hand evidence why their performing lives as a quartet were cut-short.  You cannot sustain this level of scrutiny, security, insanity for any longer than they did.  I used to think I understood, now I know I do.

One really funny sequence in the footage is from New York, where a British News Journalist in town to cover the Democratic National Convention, ends up staying at the Hotel where The Beatles are also staying.  He ends up producing several supplementary News Stories about his experiences around the madness and it's absolutely priceless.  This segment in particular really captures it all for those that weren't able to be "there".  Wherever they went. The screaming, the stiff journalists, the questions about their hair, their music...and most of all - all the humor they injected into the center of it.  Really fun.

You will enjoy the intermittent musical performances surrounded by the press conferences and one-off interviews some lucky reporters were able to garner along the way.  Whoever was spearheading the gathering of all of this video did a masterful job.  It''s beyond anymore words and I think you get the idea.  If you can get a copy of this set, snap it up.  It's history, period.  The video is amazing and the audio is equally good.  It really couldn't be any better than this production has provided.  Excellent marks on every level.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
