REVIEW:

Just in time to celebrate Chuck Berry’s 80th birthday this DVD comes out bringing the ole man back to the attention of fans with some rare 50s and 60s tv clips that show Berry’s ability to involve audiences with his trademark rhythic playing and catchy lyrics.

All of the above are in black and white except for track 5, a version of “Little Queenie” that seems taken from a film; particularly funny are the songs played with a French jazz band that seems to adapt without problem to Berry’s fun playing swinging at the sound of his classic songs just as well as the audience. All Berry’s antics are here including the duck walk and his stage appearance and showmanship is evident even from old clips with the tv camera sometimes unprepaired to follow his athletic moves. What is more interesting here are the bonus tracks that offer outtakes from Hail hail Rock’n Roll film, a project that Keith Richards wanted to film on the occasion of Berry’s 60th birthday in St.Louis. From a documentary describing the birth of RnR come the intro soon followed by another rendition of the man’s first single “Maybellene” and a reminiscent “Living In St.Louis in 1954” that is played a la Elmore James.  Next is a version of “Come On” with Robert Cray, Keith Richards and Bobby keys on a small stage that should come from Berry’s house Rehearsals that took place a couple days before the filming started. Both shows on thew 16th October 1986 were filmed with audience attending and these outtakes are taken from them, sometimes it is impossible to determine if from the 1st or 2nd show but we had to rely on set list order after having established that a longer version (for instance “No Money down” that is not mentioned on cover) was played.

An interesting compilation, most of which has been issued recently on the official 4 DVD set of Hail Hail Rock 'N Roll, but not all. This DVD is dedicated to the memory of the great Jimmy Johnson, Berry’s piano player.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
