REVIEW: |
Beginning the campaign for their 2002 album Bounce, Bon Jovi appeared at the NFL season kickoff at Giants Stadium in early September and performed "Everyday" for the TV cameras (here, the final cut on Disc 3). The tour shortly moved to Japan and, on Sept. 11 (not so coincidentally, the anniversary of 9-11) performed at a small club for an invite-only audience. From the original press release: "The band thought, when we release our new album, we want to perform at a small club as a thank you to our loyal Japanese fans. The band and the management overcame many difficulties and made a dream come true! Tickets for this special night will NOT BE ON SALE -- 100% of the attendees will be there by invitation. Tickets will be a gift from the band. The audience will be chosen by drawing from those who have pre-ordered a copy of the new album Bounce, those who win the MTV NATIONWIDE LIVE invitation contest, and those who win drawings held by various media nationwide. In addition, to accommodate the overwhelming response of fans who could not make it to the Tokyo show, the concert will also be beamed via satellite to venues in Sapporo, Sendai, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka!!! For those who can not make it to any of the venues, Bon Jovi has requested a full back up plan from MTV JAPAN…" Portions of the concert were subsequently broadcast over MTV Japan; those make up roughly half of the Tokyo portion of Welcome To The Club Shows, with songs that didn't make the broadcast culled from a very good audience tape. The broadcast material is superb ("Livin' On A Prayer" and new songs "Undivided" and "Bounce" really shine), while for the audience portion some crowd noise is audible along with a natural "flattening out" of the sound quality, but overall it is still quite acceptable. After Japan the band moved to England where, for a Bounce preview concert held on Sept. 18, they did their first European club gig in ten years. In addition to the 2,000 concertgoers, more than 10,000 people at 20 cinemas across Europe enjoyed the concert on the big screen via satellite. In addition, a free streamed webcast of the gig drew a global audience of some estimated 375,000 listeners from 63 countries - reportedly the most successful live Internet music event of all time. Ergo, the London portion of this 3 CD set - either snagged form the satellite broadcast or via a fast, extremely clean Web connection - makes for an outstanding listening experience, and the band seems quite inspired and animated (even by their usual showman standards). There's also an unexpected treat: Bon Jovi opens the show with a cover of the Kinks' "Celluloid Heroes," and none other than the song's author, Mr. Ray Davies himself, comes out to sing with the band. |
