REVIEW: |
Out of
nowhere has come out this new soundboard release for the Nantes concert from
Dylan 1984 European tour; this release as completely unexpected is the first to
offer a concert from June 1984 in crystal clear quality. This show was
previously available only in audience quality, although lacking bottom ends. Each
show of this tour sees the start with the full band and usually after 7 numbers
there is an acoustic set that in this case lasts for 5 songs before the
electric set starts again. The second part is usually unpredictable, depending
on Dylan s mood; in this case in Nantes after a couple of acoustic tracks on
the last of which Santana joins (The Times They Are A Changing) and then
depends on how long the show goes on. Here there are actually 7 encores with
seldom played tracks like It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry (first
time played here on the tour) or Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat that give this
concert added value. There had been problems in the PA system during
Imagination and A Hard Rain’s A Gonna Fall when a distinct noise came out from
the PA; a funny thing happens during It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train
To Cry, when Mick Taylor complaints: “This is the first time we played this song,
I’m very privileged to hear it” to which Dylan answers: “That’s not true, we
played it many times” all captured in the most clear sound quality. This is an interesting
release since the only document of this show was previously Nantes 1984 (Midnight
Dreamer 131) and having it as soundboard is great, although there is not much
separation from the guitars and other instruments except for the encore tracks.
