Grammy nu-goth/post-metal hotshots Evanescence check in with yet another bootleg bearing the title Fallen Angel. I sense a trend developing. At any rate, here you get a very good audience recording that captures the ever-emotional Amy Lee and company amid their rise to stardom in front of a German crowd that already seems pretty sold on ‘em. While no doubt a mainstream band from a bootlegging standpoint and therefore destined to instant used bin status once the 15 minutes are up – let’s face it, do YOU still have any of those Alanis Morissette or Soundgarden bootlegs you collected during the alterna-bubble of the ‘90s? – I still have to hand it to Godfather (curiously, employing a different name, the aptly-chosen Gothic Records, for this release) for tapping the still-thriving youth market with this and a number of other recent sets it has issued.
Bonus tracks include a genuinely moving reading of the Nirvana song (unsourced, but super sound) and four Rock am Ring fest broadcast cuts that include a Smashing Pumpkins (urk!) cover, “Zero.”
The packaging is outstanding: full-color tri-fold digi with a gorgeous blue theme similar to the official Fallen album, making this all the more desirable if you are a fan of the band. --OSWALD
