This
release presents a new 2019 transfer of the Joe Maloney recording of the Faces
concert at Boston Gardens on July 1st 1972 and it is a quite good one;
this show was previously available incomplete amongst collectors, then a
complete version surfaced some years ago called Real Good Time in Boston (Breakdown
460). The band plays very well indeed, the set list presents many classic live
Faces tracks. A brand new number in Rod Stewart words is Maggie May well received
by the audience while the second hit Stay With Me doesn’t seem to have
impressed too much the attending fans. On the second disc there are extended
medley that feature also songs from Rod Stewart solo album Gasoline Alley and True
Blue from Never a Dull Moment although recorded with the original Faces group.
It is quite strange the Faces decided to leave the stage with a slow tune, I’d
Rather Go Blind, another new song for the times. From the original upload here
are
Joe's memories:
“Rod and
the Faces were the headliners of the three act show of, Cactus, Badfinger and
The Faces and they were in great form for this show. This was the first date of
the American tour and they were ready to rock America in full Faces glory.
The original
lineup of the band was still intact and they performed all the songs that a
Faces fan could have asked for, covering material from the A Nod Is As Good As
A Wink To A Blind Horse album, through Gasoline Alley, Long Player and Every
Picture Tells A Story. This was the Faces at their peak, having a great time on
stage and putting all their "ragged" energy into the music. Opening
with It's All Over Now, they set the pace of the set and continued with great
versions of Miss Judy's Farm, Memphis, Tennessee and Stay With Me, just slowing
down a bit between those gems to do Maggie May and Jimi Hendrix' Angel. After
rocking out on True Blue and Too Bad,
the did a
medley of That's All You Need/Gasoline Alley and followed that up with The
Temptations (I Know) I'm Losing You and closed the set with Paul McCartney's Maybe
I'm Amazed. The crowd clapped and cheered for more and the Faces did not
disappoint,
with a
medley of Had Me A Real Good Time/Every Picture Tells A Story, then slowed it
down again for a nice rendition of Etta James I'd Rather Go Blind. And just
think, this three band show had ticket prices of $4.50, $5.50 and $6.50. Even
in "1972 dollars,
that was a
great bargain!
And despite my fraying
microphone cord, that caused numerous sound dropouts during the Cactus set so
for the whole Faces performance it had to be held up.”
This
recording is clearer than the previously released one, except for some distortion
of Stewart vocals at the beginning and features the full introduction
