REVIEW: |
Peter Gabriel's departure from Genesis in 1975 raised the question about whether the band could continue with Phil Collins on vocals. But the more interesting question was whether or not Peter Gabriel could cut it as a solo artist. Cleveland 1977, a cdr release on Sirene, is a perfect document recorded three week after the release of his first solo LP Peter Gabriel (aka "car") and is his first radio broadcast. A high generation taped off of the airwaves has circulated for many years and a fragment including "Ain't That Peculiar", "A Song Without Words", "Waiting For The Big One", "Excuse Me", "Slow Burn", and "All Day And All Of The Night" were included as bonus tracks on A Whiter Shade Of Pale on Highland (HL 015/15#PG1).
The set list includes the complete first album, three covers (Marvin Gaye's "Aint It Peculiar", the Kinks "All Day And All Night", and Genesis' "Back In N.Y.C."), a song that would be released the following year ("On The Air"), and the epic "Why Don't We" which was subsequently dropped never to reappear again in any form. The show begins with an alternate version of "Here Comes The Flood" with Gabriel on piano and Robert Fripp on guitar playing very Crimso-esque guitar lines. (Fripp is later introduced to the audience as "the obscure Dusty Roads".) It is interesting to note how sharp, almost generic his early material is. "Moribund The Burgermeister" is perhaps the most beholden to his earlier band, but Gabriel spent the late seventies finding his voice and listening to this show can be a bit disorientating.
Sirene uses a pre-FM master tape that was found, mastered and released by the Progressive Rock Remaster Project (PRRP) as Broken Eyes And Contact Lenses (SAE 02). Sirene copied that right down to the bonus interview from Picadilly Radio and you can read about the work done on the tape here: http://prrp-music.com/infosae02.htm It doesn't sound like Sirene worked the tape on their own since I've not heard the PRRP release, but it sounds just as it is described on their website. It is a shame this is on cdr as it really deserves a silver release. Sirene do use excellent silver discs and print the information right on them instead of gluing a label, but they simply don't have the weight, committment and authenticity of a silver. |
