Another new discovery from Satellite 6 for 2008, and another stereo soundboard as well. Not being much of a prog-rock follower or fan, this was a refreshing listen and I enjoyed the experience very much. It is nice to revisit the Peter Gabriel-era Genesis and it takes me back to those teen years listening to FM Radio stations late at night, hearing some wonderously obscure tunes. But I digress...
The first portion of the soundboard tape here suffers from over-modulation and is difficult to negotiate, especially listening through headphones. Having said that, it's a tribute to Peter Gabriel's style and interpretation that you can actually 'see' the performance as you listen and it is quite engaging. Fair warning though that the tape really distorts as the musical saturations intensify with the performance, during the quieter passages it is much less of an issue. What we get is a near-complete live performance of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway with the encore of "The Musical Box" from Nursery Cryme. Fortunately, the last 40 minutes or so of the tape our engineer finally noticed that the sound levels were burying the needles and the recording evens out fairly nicely.
The performance is relaxed and executed with near musical precision, led of course by Gabriel's personalities and color commentary. As you listen, it is quite amazing that there are overlapping qualities between Gabriel's vocal stylings and early Phil Collins' style upon reflection and thinking about the production on Wind And Wuthering just a couple of years later after Gabriel departed the band. Anyway, it's a very good show and a nice addition to the Genesis Bootleg Discography, bringing a recording of this quality to the table prompts big kudos to Satellite 6 and as I stated in the Doors review for this label, the layout and photography here are even better than that Isle Of Wight package but the digipack approach could have been upgraded a bit as it's a bit flimsy.
