Just A Pool Of Tears comes from the end of a two month long tour which was Genesis' longest tour of North America to date.  The final date would be the following night in Seattle before a short tour of South America.  This tape has been circulating for a while and Highland's version is probably the best version of this tape.  It is clear and upfront with some pronounced lower frequencies making the bass rumble a bit.  There is an annoying cut at the end of "Afterglow" and a slight right channel bias which an adjustment to the balance will fix.  There are also some  audience comments throughout the show with one girl in particular begging for "Suppers' Ready" between every song and shouts of "sit down" and "all you you shut up so we can hear this".  The problem is worst during "Robbery, Assault & Battery" drowning out Phil's pre-song narration and disrupting the song in general.

This tape has sometimes circulated as the April 3rd concert but Phil Collins' remarks about Vancouver and attending the Canucks hockey game the preceeding night (and watching them lose) confirm this as the Vancouver date and not Seattle.  Nevertheless this is a great show from a very well documented period.  The Seconds Out promo was filmed two week before this on March 19th in Dallas and their appearance on the "Mike Douglas Show", where they mimed to "Your Own Special Way" and "Afterglow" was taped on March 29th in Los Angeles.  The band are very loose with again all the band members giving introductions.  Mike Rutherford makes his usual joke about his song "Your Own Special Way" as "racing up the Venezuelan charts", Phil introduces Steve Hackett as a "used-car dealer" before his show piece "Firth Of Fifth" (containing yet another breathtaking solo) and Phil introduces "Carpet Crawlers" as another country-western song!

Chester Thompson introduced before "...In That Quiet Earth" and "Afterglow" which was their latest single.  "Supper's Ready" is preceeded by Phil Collins' "Romeo and Juliet" story which really applies to "The Cinema Show".  The song sounds massive in this recording and that one girl is very happy in appreciation.  This is one of the last times the song would be played in North America until it was resurrected five years later for the Three Sides Live tour in 1982 and then dropped forever.  "Dance On A Volcano/drum duet/Los Endos" is the closing number and one of the more effective closers.  This is really a great release of the Seconds Out era of Genesis and a time that was unfortunately eclipsed by their later pop success.  Highland include some very good photos of the band's stage set up and the simple yet dramatic lighting they used for this tour.  This is a great release by the label and is very much recommended.
