REVIEW: |
Yet another excellent sounding soundboard liberated from the Genesis vaults. Last Super Live is the penultimate Genesis concert on the Wind and Wuthering tour. The tape is very similar to the others that have been released: the band being very well balanced with Phil up front and the crowd audible but very faint.
Phil decides to be bilingual in this show mixing up German with French even in the same sentence to the amusement of the crowd. It is a typical strong set from this tour with the emphasis upon the newly released album. It is great to have more soundboard recordings of "Inside and Out" from the Spot the Pigeon EP, having replaced the maudlin minor hit "Your Own Special Way" earlier in the tour. "Afterglow" sounds very majestic in this show with the "Dance On A Volcano" finale bringing down the house. But the special standout number has to be "Firth of Fifth" with Hackett'ss solo being especialy biting. The only drawback is the first three minutes of "Carpet Crawlers" is cut leaving only a fragment of the track. It sounds like the number went down real well with this crowd judging by the bull fight cheers which follow.
This show has a special meaning because it is the second to last with Steve Hackett before he left for his solo career. Nobody knew it at the time, of course, since he left during the mixing for the Seconds Out Live LP. One wonders what Genesis would have gone on to had he stayed in the band. But as it is, this release by Sirene can stand as a tribute to the special contributions he gave to the band (barring a release of the final show in Munich on the following evening). Another worthy title by Sirene and definitely worth having. |
