REVIEW: |
This is the first title from Apocalypse Sound that I have had the privilege of viewing. I must say, they offer VERY collectable product!
Let's address the packaging first, since that is what is so exciting about getting one of these titles. As mentioned above, it's an extremely high-quality cardboard, triple gatefold digipack. The design and printing job are very professional and first-rate. Sometimes digipacks can be kind of cheesy but this is definitely not the case here. Really clever and slick all the way.
These concerts are provided on a pressed silver disc with the Apocalypse Sound graphics professionally printed on the disc itself. Looks great. We are provided interactive menus with Song Selection for easy navigating to either performance or songs.
The Ritz concert is an edited MTV broadcast from the summer of 1988, possibly a repeat showing as the concert itself was on February 2nd. This is professionally filmed of course and also a taped broadcast as all the expletives that occur are bleeped out. It is probably a 1st or 2nd generation tape that was used and it is quite good! The sound is a stereo broadcast feed and it also is great. I remember this show when it was broadcast and it is one of the first opportunities for wide exposure for the band at this point. The performance is excellent but we would see them get a lot better in the next year, or so. Classic stuff at this juncture. The highlights here are: Outta Get Me, Nightrain and of course, Paradise City.
The same cannot be said for the outdoor Paris show. We jump ahead 4 years and find the bands line-up has changed. They are now minus Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler and have added Gilbey Clarke and Matt Sorum...along with a Piano player! (who's name is not know at this time). Slash has gone from a great guitar player to an excellent guitarist. Duff McKegan is still laying down a helluva bass line too. The nightmare here is Axl Rose. He has completely lost it at this stage! This is his white spandex shorts with Doc Marten boots and assorted jackets phase. It doesn't work. He is sporting a beard and is in some sort of 90's glam-rock anti-hero. Very bizarre actually. The music has gone completely downhill at this point too. You really want to cry during November Rain because it just so painfully bad! This performance is pathetic and the special appearance by an unshaven Steven Tyler and Joe Perry can't help this show at all. Mama Kin is a complete disaster but Train Kept A Rollin' does have a nice jam in the middle section. At least Axl knew all the lyrics. We all know what happens after this point. The guy is toast. The rest of the band seems to have prevailed though, and that is good. We could sure use a GNR on the scene today!
This is a nice DVD just for the Ritz show and the great collecable nature of the package. With this title clocking in at almost 100 minutes, a great value. What a cool label. |
