George Harrison's Living In The Material World, released on Apple/EMI on June 22nd, 1973 and spending five weeks at number one on the US charts that summer, is one of the more misunderstood and underappreciated albums in recent memory.  The project which began life under the title The Magic Is Here Again was a worthy follow up to All Things Must Pass and contains several beautiful and moving compositions.  The outtake material has been released before with the acetate of "Miss O'Dell" and demo of "Sue Me, Sue You Blues" appearing on Pirate Songs (Vigotone VIGO 146) in 1995 and some tracks appearing on  on disc four of Collected Works 1962-1990 on Zapple.  Living In The Alternate World on Roaring Mouse (DPRO-79963) was the first comprehensive release devoted to all of the material and was released in 1996.  The Masterfraction label in Japan released a competing version the same year called  Spirits In The Material World (MFCD004).  This release places "Try Some, Buy Some" after "Be Here Now" to more closely replicate the LP's original sequence and includes the 1971 demo of "Sue Me, Sue You Blues" and, rather incongruously, "Dark Horse". 

MBE released Mixing In The Material World to coincide with the recent re-release of the remasted and expanded (with "Deep Blue" and "Miss O'Dell" included) version on September 26th.  The first eleven tracks on this release follow the sequence of the Masterfraction release by presenting the tracks in proper sequential order.  There is no improvement in sound quality but it is all excellent but rough.  "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)" is a rough mix with vocals and no strings.  "Sue Me,  Sue You Blues" is the instrumental track with a count-in.  "The Light That Has Lighted The World" is a rough run through with a count-in and no strings.  "Don't Let Me Wait Too Long" is an instrumental track with no strings.  "Who Can See It" is a rough mix with vocals and no strings.  "Living In The Material World" is an instrumental track and is probably the basis for the official version.  "The Lord Loves The One (That Loves The Lord)" is a rough mix that again sounds like the basis for final take.  "Be Here Now" is a rough mix with vocals and no strings.  "The Day The World Gets 'Round" is a rough instrumental mix with no strings and is "That Is All".  While there is nothing gained the label generously fill up the rest of the disc with the bonus tracks.

"Deep Blue" and "Miss O'Dell" are the acetate versions in good quality with much surface noise.  The "Sue Me, Sue You Blues" is a home demo that is very close to the final version except with the third verse ("Hold the block on money flow/ Move it into joint escrow") missing and George saying "thank you" at the end to an imaginary audience.  The demo is followed by four live tracks.  "Give Me Love" and "Sue Me, Sue You Blues" (sung with a lot of venom out of Harrison's hoarce voice) are in very good quality.  The other two,  "Who Can See It?" and "The Lord Loves The One (That Loves The Lord)" both come from the first night of Harrison's only North American tour, November 2nd, 1974 at the PNC in Vancouver, Canada.  The complete concert was released by MBE's sister label BMW in 2003 on First Live Show At Pacific Coliseum Vancouver (BMW025A/B) in the same poor to average quality.  Both of these songs were heavily produced in the studio and really didn't translate well for the stage.  The final three tracks are the original single versions of "Deep Blue", "Miss O'Dell" and that track's A-side "Give Me Love" two of which are included on the official release in better quality.  This is a very good tie in to the new Apple release and is an excellent single release of all the essential demo material from the sessions that produced this LP.
