REVIEW: |
This release
from Midvalley seems to have come out in 2021, the back cover claims so as well
as the label number (991) since the latest Midvalley release (Tribute to Jeff
Beck) has no.1082. It seems, however, that it didn’t get much attention though
and only now it is out in the original paper sleeve as well as in a new Jewel
box edition. It does feature very interesting stuff for Beatles, Clapton and
Stones collectors, since it has a copy of two rare acetates said to have been in
the possession of the late Ginger Baker. The disc starts with the cd title
song, that comes from October 1969 sessions at Trident Studios in London, known
as the Asashish Khan sessions because involved the aforementioned on vocals and
sarod, Eric Clapton and George Harrison on guitar, Billy Preston on keyboards,
Ringo Starr on drums and John Barham on piano. These tracks were produced by
George Harrison.
Next come the
acetate songs, the first is a mistitled jam from a 10” acetate coming from the
sessions for That’s The Way God Planned It lasting 11 minutes and including George
Harrison, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Ginger Baker and Richie Havens; this is
a longer version of an instrumental track called I Remember Jeep. The next song
comes from a one sided 45 rpm Apple acetate of a track that was recorded for
the same album, but this version is longer and features no backing vocals
contrary to the released version; personnel is the same as above. It is funny
to note that a few months after the Rock’n’Roll Circus Keith Richards and Eric
Clapton were again involved in another supergroup but this time not with John
Lennon but with another Beatle George Harrison and Ginger Baker on drums
instead of Mitch Mitchell. All the remaining tracks come from Jackie Lomax Is
This What You Want? album in the original mono version which came out on Apple
records and featured George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Nicky Hopkins, Klaus
Voormann and John Barham.
