This is really a great set, and also a tale of 2 discs. What that means is that the first 3-and-a-half hours featured on disc 1 seem painstakingly compiled and really provide the heart of the matter here. From the Curtis Knight performance of "Shotgun" sourced here from Nashville TV, through to the familiar Fillmore East black & white footage from New Year's Eve 1969/70 it seems like a pretty cohesive flow of this historical footage. The quality of the sources is fairly consistent, amazingly enough, sans a couple of the '67 French and German clips. Many of these I hadn't seen before, which was fun. Very solid to this point.
DVD 2 covers the year 1970 and starts with the continuation of the New Year's morning Jams from the Fillmore East in quality fashion but with some tracking fluctuation that we caught glimpses of at the end of disc 1 but not really much of an issue. This is where the experience, no pun intended, seems to start wavering a bit. It has mostly to do with "flow" and rhythm of the material rather than the quality of what is presented. There is a series of rare 16mm and 8mm footage featured from Newport and Denver Pop Fests, with a rather poor quality sequence of Dick Cavett Show TV footage sandwiched in between those and the balance of the amateur but clear festival footage, and closing ABC-TV death reports from American TV. The material here of course is no less important or enjoyable, it's just the make-up of the sources with some of it being silent that break up any momentum we had launching into this final installment. Let's face it, with over 5 hours of viewing some it is going lose traction. So, aside from the Dick Cavett Show segment - this compilation scores by utilizing the best sources that could be obtained with the material presented. Not sure why the label couldn't locate a decent source for this obviously common show - it was even released officially! Anyway, there are some very interesting points for both the connosiour and casual fans alike.
Seymour Vision utilizes some attractive artwork/imagery for the package with fairly detailed notes for the tracklisting on the back cover. Inside there is sort of a charted inventory of Jimi's performing equipment and set up. As we seem to see alot these days with Japanese releases, Seymour Vision offers a bonus CDR with the first 100 copies, which contains 1969 Message To Love Sessions from the Band Of Gypsies line-up recorded in December of '69 at The Record Plant in New York. The soundboard quality is superb and a nice bonus at that! I placed this DVD at #5 in my Top 10 List of Bootleg DVD releases for 2006. Highly recommended, seek it out.

I think the reason that they couldn't upgrade some of the common sources is because this is a direct copy of the well known Whoopy Cat vhs videotape series "Ultimate Experience" Vol. 1,2 and 3. The sequence is exactly the same, so the work was done by the legendary Mr. Cat, not Mr. Seymour. Sorry mate. Comment by Shroomy wrote on 2007-01-01 08:40:53
Hey, that's the beauty of this forum! I was not privy to the Whoopy Cat production and it makes perfect sense. Excellent info and thanks for chiming in Shroomy. All the painstakingly compiling praise thus gets transferred to "Mr. Cat" instead! We'll just tip the hat to Mr. Seymour for the digital transfer, as it works to the benefit of collectors anyway. I'll update this info in the Top 10 also for proper kudos. Comment by Svengi wrote on 2007-01-01 15:50:05
