REVIEW:

The early show performed by the Experience on the 9th of January 1969, and recorded on video, is not known as one of their better shows.   But in between sets the trio must have decided to become more focused and put in a more energetic show.   That being said, things get off to a slow and choppy start with "I Don't Live Today", but by the mid part of the song they are more in sync.   It is unfortunate that in so many of his existing recordings that Jimi had technical problems with his equipment.   By this time in their career, The Experience, were a top concert draw and one would think that these problems would have been sorted out.

Despite the technical problems Swedish Radio was able to capture this show in a very clean stereo with good channel separation.  Each instrument can be clearly heard and the mix is quite good.   If a criticism is to be made of the equalization it would be that the highs are just a little too "crispy".    Not enough to detract and be annoying, however, and it is possible that if the highs were defeated it would dampen the sound too much.   I would say that, depending on the sound system, with a small reduction of the treble the experience of the recording would be better realized.

As for the packaging, Godfather does so much with so little.   That is, they provide a tri-fold, full color spread of actual photos from the gig itself, but still manage to keep the cost down for enthusiasts.  I might also add that there is a very informative and quality essay included.   This label provides some of the best bang for the buck of any going today.   But, nonetheless, packaging is still relative.   That is, when compared to the best packaging out there (Tarantura) Godfather does not quite reach those heights.   (Then again, not many do.)   This is not meant to be too harsh a criticism because attractive packaging cannot overcome an inferior recording.

The good news is that this concert can be enjoyed many times over and will not be relegated to the shelf as a mere curiosity.   While many will already have this show in their collection this offering by Godfather would make a worthy investment for those who do not.
