REVIEW:

This release is completely based off of the included DVD which contains a superb BBC documentary about the meteoric rise and tragic death of the star that was Jimi Hendrix.  It appears to be a production that aired circa 1999 and is really excellent.  The transfer to DVD is immaculate and is one of the most interesting and informative stories on his life that I've seen.  The program starts with the September 19, 1970 death of Jimi and some of the circumstances around the night in question and then we jump all the way back to the beginnings and follow the story through.  Key interviews from Animals frontman and best friend Eric Burdon, Linda Keith, Kathy Saltzman- Jimi's first English conquest and other key friends in Jimi's life are sprinkled throughout nicely.

The title comes from the key turning point in Jimi's career when he was discovered in Greenwich Village in New York back in late-summer of 1966 by Linda Keith (girlfriend of Rolling Stones' guitarist, Brian Jones), and her reports of this amazing new guitarist.  Chas Chandler, bassist for The Animals, quickly recognized the opportunity and secured a relationship with Jimi.  He became Jimi's manager and promptly flew him over to England to develop the possibilities.  That very important flight to England on September 23, 1966 which changed music history was Pan Am Flight 102.

In the above mentioned documentary, all the key performances and milestones are featured via proshot video snipets, newsreel clips, etc.  And that is essentially the map for what is the setlist included on the 2 CD's in this set.  What Scorpio has done is sought out all the audio tapes of the musical events featured in the story, and compiled them chronologiclally to match up with the story.  As you may expect, the sources are varied but mostly pretty good in terms of the quality - from mono to stereo, audience to soundboard and every color in-between.  In cases where there is an official release, Scorpio has utilized alternate sources and NOT anything that is remotely "official" - which also lends a nice perspective to a few situations.  Some of these are seeing boot CD for the first time as near as I can tell - like "Wild Thing" from Monterey Pop and the engineering tape source for the Woodstock version of "Hey Joe".  Highlights for me are all on Disc 2 with the opening "Red House" from the New York Pop Festival and the 2 versions of "Message To Love" from the Sweden '70 shows which is funny because this isn't really one of my favorite Hendrix tunes.

To sum it all up, this is really a historical or documentary overview of the musical life of Jimi Hendrix more than anything else.  It gets top marks from me on the whole conceptual side of the release.  If you value this stuff on that level, I highly recommend it as the DVD in particular is great.  Hendrix enthusiasts might play the discs more than the casual collector due to the somewhat choppy quality transitions along the way.

This is a great set. Earth Blues & Two Trains Running are highlights for me. All of this has been out for quite awhile in various other collections but as a whole very enjoyable. The DVD is top shelf and stands up to repeated viewings. Scorpio does it again!
