REVIEW: |
This release presents the tape auctioned at Sotheby in late December 1981 by former girlfriend Kathy Etchingham that featured the Axis Bold As Love sessions. This album was full of problems from the beginning: Hendrix lost the original mix reel of side one in a taxi and never recovered it, forcing Eddie Kramer to re do it all in one night with somehow less satisfactory results; then he asked the art department to represent on the cover his Indian ancestors but they misunderstood and instead of Indian Americans on the cover there are links to Vedic personalities (from India)! Anyway these are the best sounding recordings from these sessions that included a song rehearsed with Brian Jones in two takes (not advertised on cover) but somebody claims it was just Dave Mason playing the sitar. The mix on these songs is certainly not the best one as we get Mitch Mitchell drums on one channel and Hendrix guitar on another, anyway the sound and musical quality is superb and this minor glitch can be passed over easily. These recording have come out on a number of boots like The J.Hendrix Experience Sotheby Auction Tapes (M.Beat) that came out in spring 1994 but also as Sotheby Reels (Golden Standards) and Sotheby Private Reels (JHR 003). The first track is, like its given title implies, some kind of a jazzy jam that clocks in at about 12.39 minutes and is finally heard with right speed as it was full of mistakes on previous releases. Most of the songs are instrumentals with room for other players experimenting see "Electric Ladyland (drums)" version. Godfather Records has put together the best sounding, speed corrected version of these tracks and added as bonus the fascinating jams with American group Love featuring another extraordinary guitarist Arthur Lee as bonus cuts: they played together in many an occasion, mostly jamming since the early days in Los Angeles when each one went to see the other playing in clubs. Even these tracks have a funny story as they were recorded onto an acetate that was played over the air and recorded by an amateur: these are just 4 songs out of 8 that are known to have been recorded. All wrapped in the usual GFR packaging that features the trifold digipack and booklet.
