REVIEW: |
This release from
Empress
Valley presents Led Zeppelin 10th US Tour show at
Uniondale, Nassau Coliseum, a venue that opened exactly three years before. This concert was released as Trampled Underwood (Image Quality 046-048) 3 cds, and as part of A Few Hours With St. Valentines (Cyanine Records) 6 cds and also as The New Faces (Jelly Roll 01-03), all these using an average mono recording. Empress Valley already released this show but with a different front cover, this 2011 re-release feature a pretty good recording and this is significant because of the bad acoustics of Nassau Coliseum (see the Faces recording in October of the same year). This concert happened barely 10 days before the release of the Physical Graffiti double album (where incidentally another Stone, Ian Stewart played on “Boogie With Stu”) and this is reflected on Plant words right before “In My Time Of Dying”. The former less clear, mono source is used for “The Song Remains The Same” and its introduction as well as “The Rain Song” although for a few seconds at the beginning of this song the new and better stereo source pops up. This is a clear improvement towards previously available releases; on previous versions of this show “
Kashmir” last couples minutes were missing, this time the new stereo source supplements the old mono one and we get a complete version of the song. Same for “No Quarter” that was cut at the beginning missing the intro and the stereo source allows a full enjoyment of Page solos even if throughout this song there are sudden switches from stereo to mono giving way to the thought it could have been the taper. Strangely “Trampled Underfoot” starts at the end of Disc One showing some mastering lack of care, but it starts anew on Disc Two where both “Moby Dick” and “Dazed And Confused” are also supplemented by the old mono source, the latter lasting over 41 minutes. On Disc Three “Stairway To Heaven” has a full minute of mono source from the 7th minute on. This is the only Zeppelin concert that managed to attract Stones collector as well because of Ronnie Wood involvement in the encore “Communication Breakdown” as it is strongly mentioned in this release re worked title which is credited to Led Zeppelin With Ronnie. It seems that, according to one review of the show, with Ronnie Wood also Rod Stewart came up on stage (both with sunglasses at midnight) for the encore but there is no sound evidence of that, however the Faces were in Rochester, New York 2 days before and in Kalamazoo, Michigan the day before during their 11th US tour.
