REVIEW: |
The Dirty
Mac was a one time Supergroup that John Lennon assembled for the Rolling Stones
Rock and Roll Circus extravagant tv show consisting of himself as Winston
Leg-Thigh and Eric Clapton on rhythm and lead guitars, Keith Richards on bass
and Mitch Mitchell on drums. Recorded on 11 December 1968 this was the first
time since the formation of the Beatles that John Lennon, that was still in the
group, had performed in public without them. The Dirty Mac recorded a rendition
of the Lennon penned Beatles track “Yer Blues” and then went on to back up Yoko
Ono and violinist Ivry Gitlis on a track called “Whola Lotta Yoko” ( here
called “Her Blues”) essentially an extended blues jam on top of which Ono
improvised free form vocalizations. On this nice product we get on Disc One an
excerpt from a Radio show presenting the band and an instrumental jam, then different
versions of “Yer Blues” with or without vocals, in mono, from acetate,
rehearsal or wide stereo version: the latter has a very interesting mix with
drums on the opposite side of bass; the song also
comes from the DVD source and is basically
here in all possible variations but essentially there are 2 different takes.
Interesting are the rehearsal takes that show different guitars approach with leading
vocals; however the rhythm section is very tight constructing the song s
tapestry on which Clapton s guitar highlights the riff with his lead. At the
end there is also Jagger and Lennon introduction to the Dirty Mac band and
finally the Beatles track demo version. Such a collection was already available
on cdr compiled by some fan but this version is more complete and of course
better being on silver disc and due to a great classy packaging not to mention
the accompanying DVD-R that features the song performed live from the official
DVD introduced by Jagger and Lennon: it is followed by the same songs offered
with the option of the screen split in 4 scenes. Lastly a nice backstage scene
with a different remake of the Jagger-Lennon duet with Yoko Ono and young
Julian Lennon in the background. My copy of the DVD-R acts funny as the on
screen menu doesn t react when selection is tried: basically there is need to
get into the (not so much) interactive access menu through the remote control
in order to select the appropriate chapter.
