REVIEW:

This series is dedicated to the late great John Mayall (29/10/1933 Macclesfield, Cheshire, England – 22/07/2024 Los Angeles, CA) who can be considered as one of the pillars of the UK blues as a musician, author and talent scout. In this series there are recordings from Mick Taylor's first two years with him, before he left for the Rolling Stones (although he later returned a couple of times to John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, notably in 1982-1984 and in 2004). The line-up here was: Mick Taylor on guitar, John Mayall on vocals, organ, piano, harmonica and guitar, Paul Williams on bass, Keef Hartley on drums, Chris Mercer on tenor sax, Dick Heckstall-Smith on baritone sax, Steve Thompson ‘learning bass’. Two lossy versions from the same recording circulate; the one chosen was the more complete one on which the banters have not been removed and the speed was more correct (the one with the deleted banters ran 6% faster as compared with the Helsinki gig show). This recording was made by Henri Björklund. From his notes: “Jernvallen in Sandviken is a sports arena not suitable for concerts. But, at the time, it was the only place to host big concerts. The Hollies, Jimi Hendrix Experience and some other bands, also held concerts there. Jernvallen was once, when built in 1938, considered the most modern sports arena in Europe. The arena had a very bad acoustic characterized by a disturbing and annoying echo. It was also too big – impossible to fill-up such arena in a small town”. The pictures used on the front cover were taken at the show by ‘P G Flodberg’.

As usual the recording has been de-clicked, the overall sound amplified and lots of noises like ‘closed doors’ noises attenuated as far as possible; this is a mono recording but the sound output is acceptable.
