REVIEW: |
Volume nine of this series was not posted, but it is what is called
‘hidden’ due to the fact that it presents recordings that have been officially
released. The project for this volume was to have the Berlin concert as
complete as possible. Two tracks here come from a bootleg (source #2) but are
absent on the official version (source #1). In the unofficial version the
banters were often edited and sometimes in the official version too: this
‘Frankenstein’ is the most complete version as possible. For the mutual tracks it
was chosen to merge them in order to have a more interesting sound. The result
may be disappointing but let’s remember that the official version is not of
very good sound quality either. About the tracks:
Variations
around Somebody’s Acting Like A Child [+ reprise]: except from a part before
the reprise and the last 5 seconds are solely from source #1, Baby Child has
been merged with exception of the 5 last seconds; Checkin’ Up On My Baby was merged
with
exception of the first and the 5 last seconds solely from source #1. When I
Lost My Baby Child was merged, the 9 first seconds are solely from source #2
and the 5 last seconds from source #1. 240l was merged, the 9 first seconds
& the last second are only from source #2.
Treat Me This Way and
Goin' Down The Road have been merged
with exception of the 1st
second and from 3’13 to 4’35 (this part was missed and altered in source #2). Ready
To Ride was merged, the 1st and the last 6
seconds are solely from source #1;
Tell My Baby was
merged: the
first 20 seconds are solely from source #1.
Time Has
Come is from source #2. Here a big fade in from 1’58 until 2’08 has been
upgraded. From 2’35 until 3’00 the right channel was deteriorated; it is now
restored by using the left channel duplicated.
The 2 short
banters come from source #2, then source #1: the first part of the banter was
at the end of Time Has Come in source #2 when the second part was before When I
See My Baby in the official version. When I See My Baby has been merged, while
th
e Outro With Band Introduction comes from source #2. The overall
sound is quite good nonetheless and the show is long, which is a bit striking
if compared with the shortened version of this concert present on the 30 discs
official John Mayall box. As for the performance Taylor is superb and his solos
drive the whole show.
