REVIEW: |
On April
22, 1979, The Rolling Stones and The New Barbarians, played two benefit
concerts for the Canadian National Institute For The Blind (CNIB) in Oshawa.
This shows
can be included in the New Barbarians series as Volume 04 and 05 but because
they also include the Stones it was decided to present them separately.
The gigs
were introduced through John Belushi and Cliff Lorimer. First the New
Barbarians played their set, then Jagger & Richards played Prodigal Son and
after that the Stones entered the stage (joined for the last song Jumpin' Jack
Flash by the remaining musicians of The New Barbarians: two recordings for this
show were available. One of bad quality that can be found in particular on the
Rockin’ Rott version called Our First Blind Date (RR 2000) 2cdr. The other one was
of worse quality, but contained the intro. The Rockin’ Rott recording was de-clicked,
amplified and rebalanced the channels (+25 to 30% to the right channel). This
tape ran way too fast and had to be decelerated. Using Before Tet Make Me Run
from the evening show as reference it was assumed it had to be decelerated by
-8%.
The intro
and the first second of Breathe On Me are coming from the horrible tape (ht)
after using filters to make it somehow listenable. The Stones show was found on
3 recordings. The better one is coming from the vinyl release Place Aux Dames
but also Shades & Canes (Mona Records M-KR4-Fugue) here (PAD) but missed
the 3 first tracks. On this source the channels were rebalanced (+05 to 15% to
the right channel), de-clicked and phased. On the 3 first tracks, taken from
the Rockin’ Rott release they have been decelerated by -2,35% and de-clicked.
This is probably the best sounding version of
this concert which had received very poor exposure on the few bootlegs that
document the first show and despite all the efforts remains barely audible.
