REVIEW: |
The soundboard recording of Robert Plant's December 13th show at the Hammersmith Odeon in London was first released on Wardour as Treat Her Right. It is Wardour's first release and is uniformly excellent. Flagge's version is an almost direct copy. The disc timings are the same but the label wants to put their stamp on it by fattening the bottom end with the result that this sounds very muddy and distorted. Wardour's release sounds much more clear and enjoyable and is recommended over the Flagge release unless you absolutely have to have this tape on a Led Zeppelin specific label.
I've stated before that the early to mid eighties represented Robert Plant at his most adventurous, progressive and interesting. Almost any recording from that era is worth listening to and this is a wonderful concert. It has a nice recording of the rarely played "Burning Down One Side" and of course Jimmy Page joining Plant on stage for the encore of "Treat Her Right", a song written by Hood and Kurtz, first recorded by Roy Head & the Traits in 1965 and covered by George Thorogood & the Destroyers in 1988 on the album Born To Te Bad. Flagge put the picture of them together on the back insert (and featured in The Concert File) and used a close up of Plant on the front cover taken from the Live Aid gig. |
