REVIEW: |
Keep On Jamming! is the latest release by the Beelzebub label and presents two recent Robert Plant shows and one previously unknown soundboard fragment. The first disc covers his appearance at the 40th Montreux Jazz Festival this past July 30th. It is a very good and perfectly enjoyable audience recording taped some distance from the stage. There is some distortion in the louder passages that are present on the source which would be very difficult to remove. Plant's talking between songs is difficult to hear because of the distance and the chatty people surrounding the microphone speaking over him. This day was to celebrate Ahmet Ertegun of Atlantic Records and the final day of the festival to celebrate the memory of his brother Nesuhi. Jimmy Page was also scheduled to play but backed out two weeks before because of "surgery", thus eliminating any speculation about a possible Page/Plant collaboration. The tape begins with guitarist Nile Rodgers speaking about a phone call he received from Ahmet to play on with Robert Plant and The Honeydrippers EP and how much of an honor it is.
The band play with an amazing version of "Rocking At Midnight" before launching into a set dominated by Ray Charles songs, "Lonely Avenue", "I Got A Woman" and "Leave My Woman Alone". The latter song begins with Plant singing off key (shades of the 1971 Paris Theater broadcast and "What Is And What Should Never Be") before ending with "Don't Play That Song" where the band is joined by the song's author Ben E. King. The set ends with an all-star jam on Sister Sledge's disco anthem "We Are Family". (It's a rather strange choice but it is all in good fun). The first disc ends with two bonus tracks from the Montreux Festival from July 7th, 2001. This occasion celebrated Sun Records and was the final time Robert Plant played with Jimmy Page and made famous for the inclusion of "Candy Store Rock" in the set list. A fair to good DAT audience recording was released by Empress Valley soon after the event, but Beelzebub found a two song fragment from the soundboard in excellent quality. "Baby Let's Play House" is remarkable especially since Page stated this Elvis song inspired him to pick up the guitar in the first place. "Heart In Your Hand" is from the the Page/Plant Walking Into Clarksdale LP and although that album is generally weak this is a mesmerizing performance of the piece.
The second disc contains Plant's complete set at the Sunflower Festival on September 14th, 2006. This was a benefit for the UCLH Cancer Services and his set lasted for forty-five minutes of Zeppelin and other covers. It is an audience recording very similar to the Montreux 2006 tape. It is listenable but far from the stage with trace amounts of distortion in louder passages. "I'm Your Witchdoctor" by John Mayhall is the opening song and sounds great in this recording. The Led Zeppelin numbers include "What Is And What Should Never Be", "Good Times Bad Times" and "Ramble On", introduced as coming from the Misty Mountain. An Elvis cover ("Can't Help Falling In Love") and "Crawling Up A Hill" by Katie Melua are joined by the Buffalo Springfield classic "For What It's Worth". Beelzebub do always have impressive packaging and this comes in a cardboard gatefold sleeve with several photos from the Montreux set embossed on the cardboard. Keep On Jamming! is being advertised as a "Christmas present for Robert Plant fans" and that is definitely the case. The sound quality is all very good and the concerts are very enjoyable and this is one of the better Robert Plant releases to come out this year. |
