REVIEW: |
Robert Plant Special 2005 is a nicely assembled collection of his various promotional appearances to promote Mighty Rearranger. The majority of the documents date to last spring when the album was first released with the exception of the first part of the cdr. This comes from a BBC Radio 3 broadcast recorded on December 5th at the Maide Vale Studio and was broadcast at 10:15 pm on new year's day. Plant begins with his interpretation of Dylan's "Girl From The North Country" and follows with "Let The Four Winds Blow" before a ten minute interview with Andy Kershaw where Plant speaks about conspiracies and his new vision.
The appearance on "Later...With Jools Holland" is good in that he plays three songs and sits down with an interview. The David Letterman and Conan O'Brien appearances are much shorter, only singing "Shine It All Around". The Iclandic television contains only an interview during his visit on April 22nd, 2005. He answers the questions from the interviewer including acknowledging that "Immigrant Song" is indeed about Iceland. Finally the fragment from Sweden on April 18th contains the encore "Whole Lotta Love" preceeded by a medley of only hits like "Honey Bee". An interesting nod to the early circa 1971 Led Zeppelin.
The quality of both the audio and video is flawless. The cdr acts for the most part as a soundtrack for the dvdr (except for the Kershaw fragment) and is in perfect soundboard quality. The visuals on the dvdr are also taped right off of the television but are again flawless. Only the Icelandic television part might have been better, but it's good enough to enjoy. The limitation with this set is that it has four different versions of "Shine It All Around" the first single from Mighty Rearranger. Only on the British media does he expand the repertoire a bit with Dylan and Zeppelin covers. Such is the nature of promotion. That song, and also "Takamba" (played twice), are good songs with the mellow groove Plant has been favoring for a while now.
This is the first, and probably only, release on the Sound + Vision cdr label. It is a very good compilation with excellent source tapes, and again makes me wish more thought and care were put into the presentation. These should have been on silver, and the packaging isn't very attractive since the label utilize only one sided inserts. |

The DVD is actually out on SILVER DVD in Europe as ROBERT PLANT TV APPEARANCES 2005 on the PENGU LABEL. CAT. No. PENG-7. Just the DVD no CD included. Comment by Balk wrote on 2006-02-13 21:35:41
Balk is absolutely correct. This release even copies the artwork. The only advantage this release has is the inclusion of the BBC3 show from last month. Comment by gsparaco wrote on 2006-02-14 10:00:27
