REVIEW: |
Created
in June 1977 by Ian Stewart with the help of Charlie Watts when they were
attending George Green and Bob Hall album sessions with many other friends,
Rocket 88 was an extravagant outfit that, at the beginning of the punk era,
decided to turn the clock back to the 30s and present a live environment for
big band and boogie-woogie tunes played by a number of enthusiastic musicians
that gathered together informally whenever possible. An official album has come
out, recorded live in Hannover, but no underground recordings have been made
available so far.
Recently Bob Hall posted on his website a video of this concert; this video
presents more titles than what we had until now and in better quality so it is
a good complement to Vol 02 that was posted some years ago. To complete it St
Louis Blues was added, coming from the video which was presented by a Dutch TV
(AVRO) program: North Sea Jazz Festival '79.
The lne-up consisted of Charlie Wtts
on drums, Alexis Korner on guitar and vocals, Jack Bruce on bass, Bob Hall on
piano and vocals, George Green on piano, Dick Morrissey on sax, Colin Smith on
trumpet, John Picard on trombone and Cousin Joe Pleasant on vocals.
