REVIEW: |
The Stones
came back to a club in London during the Voodoo Lounge European tour and it
happened in Brixton; as stated in the accompanying booklet of this release
these recordings have been out before, a few weeks after the concert an
European bootleg named Having A Laugh At Brixton came out with an audience
recording of the concert, soon followed by a Japanese release called Live At
Brixton Academy (VGP 094 ) with a slightly improved sound and on a no label
called Brix 95, on Having a Laugh in Brixton )BAL 19795) and as Brixton
Unplugged (Typhoon TYN 008-9). Four songs came out on But Naked (VGP 071) and
on Rare Live Tracks From The Voodoo Lounge Tour (Lost Syndicates RS1), three on
More Stripped (KTS 585),
on Censored
(Electric 30041) and on Lost Legal Live Tracks (Rattlesnake 235-6), Stripped
Companion (RSTS 001),
Then the Stones
released Stripped that featured Like A Rolling Stone, Black Limousine and Live
With Me. Just few months ago some rumours began to circulate in the collectors
forums about a soundboard recording of the gig; the master tapes having been
located, the label did some work on them with some editing but then decided to
release the cds at the same time of the vinyl box set, in order to avoid
duplication by other labels; also a pro shot film is said to exist, hence we
hope a DVD will follow some time in the near future; meanwhile an audience
recording has been available as Midnight at Brixton (WOW 047) as well as
Brixton Academy 1995 (D Stone 007). This recording is a very nice soundboard
that presents the whole show without exception, a wide stereo version with hot
remaster that presents a very loud recording which is more enjoyable than the
official songs that came out of it. Some fans have complained because of the
fact that Keith Richards who is usually heard on the right channel is here on
the left channel, a funny argument because at least for those using headphones,
it is very much easier to turn the headphone than remaster the whole concert.
Anyway this is the original first version of this release that comes with an
informative 12 pages booklet that recalls the summer of 95 and the small club
in Brixton. The set list is very good as well, offering songs like Down In The
Bottom, Shine A Light and Connection rarely played together with the acoustic
versions of Dead Flowers, Sweet Virginia and Love In Vain; mega rock anthems
like Tumbling Dice, Live With Me and the final warhorses blend in easily with
new songs You Got Me Rocking and I Go Wild, let alone the version of Like A
Rolling Stone, played differently as Jagger said from The Big Place, a.k.a.
Wembley; one of the best songs played though is Black Limousine, selected at
the insistence of Ronnie Wood as Jagger confessed introducing it too early and
played with great confidence, it can certainly be regarded with one of the most
iconic products the Wood era has delivered together with it s Only Rock and
Roll; however there is a furious take of Rip This Joint just over 2 minutes in
length that is one the best ever live versions of this song. This is a nice
release, probably after the Munich Cirkus Krone 2003, another great unexpected
gift for Stones fans who like to hear the band in small places, now how about
Paradiso?
