REVIEW:

This compilation presents some rare outtakes that have come out in recent years but seem to have been overlooked by many bootleggers, including one track, the last one, that does not circulate at all.

Alright Charlie appeared in August 2021 just after the drummer’s death, this is the third version of the track that appeared on Voodoo Residue and has finished vocals. Down In The Bottom appeared in February 2022, this is a genuine alternate of the song recorded in February 64, most likely the very first attempt, slightly faster than the known version featuring additional piano.

The song Fragile (Like China) appeared in June 2022, but this verse was sung by Jagger during It’s Funny in the Cocksucker Blues film, here though we have a full 6 minutes song allegedly from ‘85. Chuck Berry Number (previously known as Blues) appeared in October 2022 as an instrumental jam that was recorded in 1975 with Harvey Mandel possibly when auditioning new guitarists to fill Taylor’s place. Next is Paying The Cost To Be The Boss, the BB King track that was covered by the Stones in 1997 with the man, but this version appeared in November 2022 and is longer and without Jagger’s harmonica, however it was rumoured a 10 minutes unfaded version existing. Hide Your Love came up in December 2022, an early take featuring Mick Taylor, it is anyway puzzling why it was not included in the De Luxe version of Goat’s Head Soup. This version is a bit muddy with the piano upfront. Dirty Work Blues, from 1985, was published in April 2023 together with Truck Driver Blues from 1982, that formerly was known as Looking For Trouble, this version is however more polished and different. I Don’t Need You Anymore (working title I’m Cured) appeared in December 2023 on Keith’s birthday and represents Keith Richards farewell to heroin addiction and features fiddle player Lily Haydn who also played violin on Too Tight and Anyway You Look At It; this song reminds One Hit a bit in its chords progression. Head In The Toilet Blues came up on Jagger’s birthday in July 2024 and is another outtake from BB King Duets album, a great 10 minutes long track in excellent quality with a full brass section.

High Or Low and Undercover Of The Night came out in December 2024 on the occasion of Keith Richards birthday, the former seems a slow version of Keys To Your Love using its same bridge and middle 8, this is a finished track even having backing vocal. Concerning this version of Undercover, it must be the real first attempt at it, since it features just an acoustic guitar, together with lots of percussions, so it must be an early demo. Finally, Open The Door To Your Heart the Donnie Elbert/Darrel Banks Northern Soul classic which was originally published in 1966, never appeared anywhere but we can say that it was received for Christmas 2024 and that it represents a bit of a puzzle; the track is listed as recorded in 1985, but here we have Keith Richards singing the first minute of the song and then Jagger steps in at 1.20; how they did create such an harmonic vocal duet in the middle of what was called WWIII, when the two leaders barely spoke to each other?. The song is a fast ballad lasting just about 3 minutes that seems to have ended at 1.43 but then stars again, this does not circulate so it is unlikely to be found on any boot for the time being.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
