REVIEW: |
Here we
get another release with both Seattle 72 shows, actually an upgrade of
the Stones shows, remastered by Graf Zeppelin, presenting the definitive
coupling of the 1st & 2nd show. It was remastered from the master and 1st generation
material released by JEMS several years ago for both shows. The 1st show is
from a 1st generation recording because the master was lost. The main part of
the 2nd Show is from a sound source known as LP or Seattle Superfonic (DAC-013),
and this time it is material that is said to be from the master. A source
called Rec1 (known as A Fair To Remember (VGP-141, etc.) has been used to fill
in the missing part (Happy-Loving Cup) which was from the 1st generation. The
1st show had a shrill texture leaning towards the mid-range with the previously
released sources (VGP-141): this time the record has hiss, but it has a well-balanced
natural sound. Completely mono, avoiding problems with phase and band shift of
the basic sound source; also, some parts such as the beginning of the live
performance, the beginning of Disc Two, and the ending are slightly longer than
on the previous releases. The main sound source for the 2nd Show is the sound
source known fromo the DAC-013 version. This version has a slightly brighter
texture than the slightly dense texture of the DAC version, and this one also
has a well-balanced natural sound. Completely mono too, avoiding problems with
phase and band shift of the basic sound source. Depending on how you listen, it
has a somewhat rustic texture, but excessive processing has been refrained
from. Happy to Loving Cup are completely supplemented with Rec1. Also, compared
to the DAC version, some parts before and after the cut parts such as the Band
Intro at the beginning of Disc Three and the beginning of the first Midnight
Rambler are longer. The first concert in Seattle was released in 1997 on A Fair
To Remember (VGP 141), then in 2010 on STP Chronicles (SODD 118-121) and Word
With You (Dasuje NHK) and lately on Seattle June 4th 1972 (D&D Archives
Master Vol.2).
The second
concert was released in 1985 on vinyl as A Fair To Remember (Archive Audio
646472 NSW), then on cd in 1995 on The Loveliest Night Of Seattle 1972 (IMP
034-5) and in 1997 as A Fair To Remember Revisited (VGP 141) then Seattle
Superfonic (DAC 013), STP Chronicles (SODD 118-121) 4cd, in 2010. Lately on cdr
came out Seattle WA June 4, 1972 (D&D Archives Master Series vol.4) which
offered a new transfer from master tapes thanks to JEMS. Together with the
Vancouver show was released again in 2013 as American Exile (Scorpio 2496-8) 3
cds copied on Here Come The Rolling Stones (Eat A Peach 12-14) 3cd. Midnight
Rambler and Love in Vain can be found on Vancouver First Night (Off Beat
Records 99159017366-7) that came out in 1994, Happy is on 100% Odd Lots (VGP
026) released in 1997, while 11 tracks in mono can be found on Germany 1973
(DAC 072) which came out in 2007. There have been so far 3 sources for this
concert: The Loveliest Night of Seattle 72 and A Fair To Remember Revisited the
1st one, Seattle Superfonic the 2nd and Germany 1973 the
3rd.
Now some specific
differences: on the 1st Show, the Introduction has the first 2 seconds
longer than on VGP, on Disc Two the Band Introductions has the first 5 seconds
longer than VGP, on Street Fighting Man the last part of the show is 7 seconds
longer than on VGP. However, it must be said that there is some distortion
especially on the drums; Rip This Joint fades out and Jumping Jack Flash fades
in, but there is also the Outro.
On the 2nd Show, the Introduction has the first 5 seconds
longer than DAC version with the announcement of The Stones. On Disc Four the
Band Introductions has pitch issues fixed up around 1:00, All Down The Line was
not included on DAC disc after 4:43, Midnight Rambler (false start was not
included on DAC disc until 0:44, Midnight Rambler from 9:33-9:42 was not
included in the DAC version. It is possible to hear Mick's All right! this time;
on Rip This Joint 2:21-2:26 was not included in the DAC version. This recording
is better but the vocals are buried and there is a bottom rumble that distubs
the overall enjoyment.
