REVIEW: |
This recent release from Mayflower is the second with this name from
this label, but the first one (MF 22-23) was a 2 cds set that was released in
2013. This too presents the sessions from 1969 through October 1970 generally
known as Sticky Fingers Sessions (hence this collection’s name). Disc One starts
with the newly found early take of Brown Sugar followed by 2 more tracks from
Muscle Shoals Studios; then follow 3 versions of Sister Morphine, the 2nd
one having been shortened (version 2 being the only one different from version
3 which ended on Sticky Fingers). After Jiving Sister Fanny and Hillside Blues (aka
I Don’t Know The Reason Why) come 2 takes of You Gotta Move and an early vocal
mix of Brown Sugar with no lead guitar ending with Keith Richards saying “Oh
baby”.
On Disc Two we have more stuff from the Muscle Shoals and London
sessions with the addition of official versions from Sticky Fingers, however
You Gotta Move is mono, the last track is the famous version of Brown Sugar
with Eric Clapton that was released on Sticky Fingers De Luxe. The 11 versions
of Brown Sugar being just fragments taken from Gimme Shelter movie; there are
also the 2 songs taken from the first pressings of Hot Rocks 2 LP compilation. Disc
Three presents all well known outtakes that have been released endlessly like Dancing
in the Light and Leather Jacket and the usual Cocksucker Blues which has
nothing to do with Sticky Fingers, or the Stargroves sessions from October 1970
that feature Trident Jam, So Divine, Potted Shrimp and Travelling Man
instrumentals together with the alternate mix of Bitch, Sway and Wild Horses with
glass harmonica. Disc ends with two tracks from Fully Finished Outtakes. Packaging
is kind of unimpressive as both front and back cover are almost totally in black
and white and show the known Sticky Fingers cover, it does have an OBI as all
Japan products and the discs are picture discs though; as usual recording dates
are mostly wrong.
