REVIEW: |
One of the many side projects that happened when two major musicians from different groups joined forces the Townshend-Lane album Rough Mix came out in 1977 produced by Glyn Johns and featured some friends helping out like Eric Clapton that played the dobro (on tracks 1,14 and 16), John Entwistle, Charlie Watts (on Tracks 12) and Ian Stewart (on Track 13), Charlie Hart, Lyle and Gallagher, Mel Collins, Rabbit Bundrick, Boz Burrell etc. All these tracks come from three 10” Reel to Reel tapes that have unfinished mixes and outtakes. Tracks 2,5,6,8 are instrumental backing tracks while Tracks 10 and 11 (with probably
Watts and Stewart too)
came out in the de luxe edition of the album released in January 2007. Track 13 is known as Cat Melody from the official album but here is called Cat Melodian because of how it was written on the tape box. The music included in this underground album is beautiful and broad in range while keeping the characteristic flavour of both Townshend and Lane solo adventures. Packaging is very good with detail tracks on back cover and liner notes in the inside front booklet, the only criticism could be that the front cover shot is too similar to the official album and since this project title is as well (Rough Mix vs Rough Mixes) it may confuse some customer.
