REVIEW: |
The Vertigo Tour Opener from Phoenix and spirits are high on both sides, for the band and the sold out crowd - which you might expect.
Do not let the video grade here fool you. This is a superb audience/fan production using 2 different hand-held digital cameras and the results are excellent. I'm just not sure how the tapers synched this up seamlessly, but it is a stellar effort. Silent Sea did the right thing by sourcing this one, getting what appears to be a transfer right from the master and producing a beautiful silver disc collectable for U2 fans.
The video like I said, is great. Camera #1 is straight back from the stage inside Glendale Arena and provides the front view of the show with pretty smooth zooming to mix up the shots. Camera #2 however is the clear winning vantage point from the upper left stage, and this video is quite stunning for the majority of the performance. I had to knock down a couple of points for some periods of unsteadiness with the cameras - plus the fact it's audience source and the options for making interesting shots are limited. These guys (the actual tapers) produced one of the best audience-shot productions I've seen though.
The show itself presents a veteran band ready for the road. Save for Bono's usual political dissertations and some rather airy interpretations at times, it's a solid performance. What is readily apparent when you get to "New Year's Day" and the other warhorses in the line-up is that we are now at that "easy-listening" approach to the game where there is more Roll and MUCH less Rock! But I'm sure if you were down front it would have a much better impact. Though the audio captured on this video is near perfect, only losing some of the quieter moments from Bono and his guitar and drumwork along the way. This could have been an issue with the live house mix as well.
Silent Sea have committed themselves to providing extremely collectable titles with these new DVD releases coming housed in supremely crafted Digipacks - much like The Godfather Records - and the graphical designs and photography are tops. Thus making this latest release of a video which was being circulated earlier in the Summer, highly recommended. The menus could have been improved on greatly but overall very, very nice.
