This is a great 2 CD set taken from the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater show. Tracks from this concert were released as the album "Under A Blood Red Sky" and was in truth my first real introduction to U2. I always loved the smoking version of "I WIll Follow" taken from UABRS.
Well, here is that wonderful show, much loved by U2 fans. This set captures a band touring in support of their third album (WAR). This is a band who hasn't realesed Pride (In The Name Of Love), or With Or Without You as of yet. This is a band still hungry. They are on the edge of success and that feeling really comes across in this show.
The packaging is nice with full colour artwork throughout. The back cover states that a song called "The Cry" should come before "Electric Co.". There really is no song missing from the set. "The Cry" is actually just the intro to "Electric Co."
As well, according to the excellent U2tours.com website, the final two songs on the second disc (I Threw A Brick Through A WIndow and A Day WIthout Me) were actually played between New Years Day and Gloria in the set. At the time of this show and for several years to come U2 would end the show with the haunting refrains of "40" echoing through the crowd. Anyone who saw them live in those days will remember leaving the concert with the audience still singing along.
All instrumentation is well represented across the sound field. Bono's vocals as well as the backing vocals are well defined. All in all a wonderful document of a band on the cusp of incredible success.
Bono can be heard endulging his penchant for quoting from other people's songs to interesting effect ("Bring On The Clowns" with the word crowd substituted for clowns during "Electric Co" and "Let's Twist Again" during "Two Hearts Beat As One" during which he forgets the words and tries to get the crowd to sing them instead)
Highlights include "Out Of Control", "Two Hearts Beat As One" and the killer "Sunday Bloody Sunday".
Highly recommended.
