REVIEW: |
The Concert
for the Planet happened in early March 2001 at New York’s Beacon Theatre was a benefit
for the Rainforest Alliance, the line up for this concert was: Keith Richards,
Dr. John, Kim Wilson, Larry Taylor, Steve Jordan, Babi Floyd, Southside Johnny,
Jackson Browne, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Hubert Sumlin, Keb Mo’, Levon Helm,
BR5-49, Odetta.
Disc One starts,
after a long introduction, with BR5-49 which was a country rock band formed in
1993 who lost two of his founding members right in 2001; here they play The
Price of Love and are joined by Levon Helm for Rolling By My Sweet Baby’s Arms.
Next comes the late great Hubert Sumlin playing Muddy Waters I’m Ready and
Blind, Crippled And Crazy where he is joined by Kim Wilson from the Fabulous
Thunderbirds as well as on Work Together. Clarence Gatemouth Brown comes in for
River Invitation and Left Over Blues. Then comes Southside Johnny who ends Disc
One. Disc Two opens with Odetta who sings while playing the piano; same pattern
with Dr. John who starts with the famous Koko Taylor anthem; next comes Keb Mo’
with his gentle blues; he portrayed Robert Johnson, might as well portray Mississippi
John Hurt just in case someone decides to do a biopic on him. Jackson Browne
comes then, right after its Keith Richards’ turn. After the blues Key To The
Highway a couple of track from his solo works, the first from the Winos and the
second from the Stones libraries. The encore is the classic Chuck Berry hit
which represents the right end of a memorable night.
The line-up
for the songs that featured Keith Richards consisted of him on guitar and vocals,
Dr. John on piano, Kim Wilson on harmonica, Larry Taylor on bass, Steve Jordan on
drums, Babi Floyd on backing vocals for the first three tracks, while the last
one, the encore, saw also Jackson Browne, Southside Johnny and Keb Mo’ helping
out. As a footnote due to the reason behind this concert it is stunning that
Chuck Leavell did not attend it.
This is a
DAT recording that presents a nice document of that evening show, the recording
is complete and quite clear although there is a problem on World In Motion on
Disc Two. I am not aware of any commercial release of this recording, therefore
it must be considered an interesting one for collectors.
