REVIEW:

Just about a year and a half after the event that brought together many musicians/friends of Jeff Beck for a tribute to the mam’s great career, appears on the market this release from Tarantura that documents both nights. This is certainly interesting but after A Tribute To Jeff Beck by E.Clapton & Friends (Midvalley 1082-7) came out a year ago dedicated to that same event offering in a rich boxset with 6 cds and 2 DVDs it is not certainly stunning. Another set with similar name A Tribute To Jeff Beck credited to Various Artists was released shortly after (Stargazer 00259) but that had only the first night recording on 3 cds and 1 DVD.

The Tribute to Jeff Beck happened in late May 2023 with 2 consecutive nights in London’s Royal Albert Hall each lasting over 3 hours. Eric Clapton’s band was the house band at first with many performers presenting their best to homage the late guitarist, followed by the Jeff Beck Band. Most of the artists that had played with Jeff Beck in any phase of his career showed up. This release presents both nights concerts documented in 3 cds each. Both nights setlist are identical and there are no surprises; the first show begins with Eric Clapton and his band playing Blue Rainbow followed by the screen movie Rumble, then more songs with Doyle Bramhall and Derek Trucks that joins in for Little Brown Bird and Susan Tedeschi also on Done Somebody Wrong and The Sky Is Crying. Ron Wood joins them on Beck’s Bolero which ends Disc One. Disc Two starts with some recorded interviews, then the Jeff Beck Band appears with Johnny Depp and Billy Gibbons for Isolation, followed by Remember (Walking In The Sand) where they are helped by Imelda May and Ron Wood. On Goodbye Pork Pie Hat (a song by Charles Mingus for Lester Young) Derek Trucks joins them playing Jeff Beck licks with the help of Chis Stainton on keyboards; on You Know You Know and Stratus appears John McLaughlin playing Mahavishnu Orchestra tracks Beck contributed to. Rough Boy has the spotlight on former ZZ Top Billy Gibbons while the last 2 songs see again Ron Wood playing bass on Rice Pudding (using the same instrument he played with the Jeff Beck Group) and guitar on Train Kept-A Rolling which also features Kirk Hammett (Metallica). On Disc Three Eric Clapton is back for Freeway Jam with the help of Robert Randolph, followed by Joss Stone on I Put A Spell On You, Gary Clarke Jr. on Cause We Ended As Lovers and Let Me Love You, Rod Stewart on Infatuation together with Ron Wood that stays through the end, with two final songs where all the musicians join in: People Get Ready and Going Down. The second night is played faster because all musicians somehow rehearsed the night before. The setlist is exactly identical and the songs played in the same order too; the recording is just as good but there is more audience participation.

This is an excellent release, packaging is superb with all discs housed in a gatefold LP sized sturdy plastic case – 3 for each side; as for the audio quality it is excellent too: all instruments are clear and no audience interferences. It is weird, however that there had not been any official release.
