REVIEW:

This release is most likely the last underground version of the famous jam that took place in late November 1981 at Chicago s Checkerboard Lounge between a bunch of blues greats led by Muddy Waters and some members of the Stones since there will be an official DVD-CD release this coming July. This is a fantastic jam that happened one night in late November 1981 during a night off from the Stones concerts at Chicago. At Buddy Guy’s Checkerboard Lounge Muddy Waters and his band were playing their set when most of the Stones (minus Wyman who allegedly stayed in his hotel working on his primitive computer or Watts who was not shown on camera) and their entourage (B.Keys,Stu,Ian McLagan and Ernie Watts) showed up at the club to eyewitness the master’s performance. It is hard to say unexpected, since here we get glimpses of their arrival from outside the Lounge. This version starts with some low quality footage from some songs before Muddy Waters hit the stage with the camera mostly on the audience; the first song audio is mono but from Sweet Little Angel onwards we get the stereo soundtrack. As per the video footage the first 5 songs have low quality, however there is a fantastic version of Country Boy; of the  three following songs footage is missing replaced by a slide show, then come good quality video. The stereo soundtrack was uploaded in 2007 but first used to my knowledge on TSP 3 LPs set The Ultimate Sweet Home Chicago last year (minus the first song). After awhile it is Muddy himself that calls on stage at first Mick Jagger, then Keith Richards, then Ron Wood and they perform some of Waters blues classics. Afterwards Buddy Guy,Junior Wells and Lefty Dizz all join in and the jam goes on with Stu playing piano from Next Time I See You onwards. The greatest sounding songs are the ones taken from DAC Sweet Home Chicago 1981 but the most uplifting moment is through Mannish Boy when Buddy Guy, Junior Wells and Lefty Dizz come on stage, the true spirit of a blues jam captured in these minutes. On Next Time I See You there is a great guitar battle between Keith Richards and Buddy Guy both showcasing their personal particular style, later Lefty Dizz joins them with his own left handed master work. On Talking About My Baby (aka Ugly Woman Blues) it is time for Ron Wood to have a solo spot too while when Muddy Waters comes back on stage for Clouds In My Heart it is Keith Richards turn for a tasty solo followed by Ron Wood and John Primer. On Champagne and Reefer Muddy Waters get some hash from the audience but then has to shout in order to have all guitarists low down their guitars: his duet with Jagger ends the show even if there are a couple more instrumentals after that, but most of the guests have gone. Final words are Muddy Waters thanking his band and the Stones and his wife.

The best toys are the ones that are both educational and multi-purposeful.
