REVIEW: |
From the 4Reel camp of labels, comes this super document of The Who's Quadrophenia 1996 Tour Production.
This appears to be a direct transfer from the master tape and is filmed in-house at the E.J. Nutter Center in Dayton for the sake of providing images on the screens during the show. The camera work is great though the screen does go black at times (in between the videotaped Jimmy narrations & the next tune) and there are only 2 real "negatives" about this piece: The mood of Daltry, Entwhistle & Townshend, and the fact that there is a counter burn-in that runs throughout the video in the upper-left corner of the screen.
The individual members of The Who seem to be having a down night, mood-wise. They sound very good, remember - Pete only played Acoustic Guitar during those '89 and '96 outings due to his hearing trouble, so the story goes - and frankly he is always fun to watch but his playing here isn't up to the Townshend standard. He is backed-up on this jaunt by both his brother, Simon, and another chap whose name escapes me as I write. The real highlights of the performance are the guest appearances by Gary Glitter as "The Godfather" and Billy Idol as "Ace the Face". These 2 are absolutely maginificent and makes me wish we could have had them at the show I attended on this tour. A real honorable mention goes to Zak Starkey, turning in another enthusiastic drumming performance on this April 11th evening. Don't get me wrong, this is a fun production with the guests and you'll really enjoy this show.
This isn't a complete show, probably missing 5-7 minutes of the instrumental pieces, "Quadrophenia" at the beginning of the show, and "The Rock" being cut on the tail end...along with the entire encore of classics they come back out and play. That being said, Mod Beat/4Reel have another banner DVD title for Who fans. Sourcing this show was a real victory. The '96 version of Quadrophenia here in Dayton may not have quite the bite as it did in 1973, but the guys still rock out and I'm very pleased they decided to take this theme on the road. And now we all have a great little souvenier of the event. Load the DVD player and crank this one up - enjoy. |
