REVIEW: |
Released late Summer of 2005, HiWatt's "Tangled Up In Who" started a run of excellent, vintage WHO bootleg DVD releases and this is certainly recommended even though it would seem that a complete master of either of these two sources utilized, exists. Either would potentially give us the "definitive" Tanglewood '70 experience but until then - this will suffice, kids. Note that 3 tracks are featured on the official "30 Years Of Maximum R&B" DVD from MCA Music DVD. They are "Heaven And Hell", "I Can't Explain" & "Water".
For the first 52 minutes and change, we get the first half of the show taken from what seems to be a direct dub from the Bill Graham master video. The footage is shot from 2 cameras with the primary angle from Stage Left and the other out front of the stage with a straight-on shot. This source has a running timer in the bottom middle of the screen along with the burn-in "Bill Graham Presents". This isn't as annoying as one would think and this transfer is crystal clear but interestingly enough, the color seems to be all but missing. It almost appears to be black & white for the first 10 minutes or so. Both sources feature an excellent mono soundboard audio track and this first source is the most consistent due to it being direct from the master source. It's the age-old cry...where's the rest? Wolfgang's Vault!...that's where! Perhaps in due time. This first source ends and cuts about two/thirds into "Eyesight To The Blind".
Source #2 would almost be preferable - IF it were also from a master source. It features a more consistent straight on shot of the stage but it's the brighter and more colorful print that is the big take away with this one. The issue is that it is also taken from a higher gen source so the clarity suffers and the more vivid colors are also starting to wash out. The audio on this source is noticably rougher throughout as well.
This Tanglewood performance is really stellar and it's also cool to have the Bill Graham introduction (also featured on "Maximum R&B"). It just adds to the event and authenticity of that first source print. Scorpio/HiWatt have issued the title as part of their "Archive Edition" series and I think that was a smart moniker and really sets up what this fantastic video document/project is...part of an archive for WHO collectors. The only complaint with the label is that they never bother to administer any technical or editing expertise and continually provide content as a "dub to silver disc" effort without any "remastering" or hands-on work with the source tapes. Depending on your point-of-view that is a positive or negative. The benefit to us all is that the material is made available. In this day and age of widespread technical advancements and available equipment we just expect these labels to make the effort. Oh yeah, this is the bootleg industry. No standards. At least we know what to expect with most of the familiar labels these days and the Scorpio family is certainly better than the average out there. You can't go wrong with this DVD. A nearly complete show in proshot quality. If we could only get a stereo soundboard of the event we would have the makings of the upgrade right there. Until then indeed...
