REVIEW: |
When director Jim Jarmusch edited Year Of The Horse in 1997, his documentary about Neil Young & Crazy Horse's 1996 world tour, he used previously unreleased footage from their legendary 1976 world tour with significant clips from the two concerts in Tokyo and one in London in March. Since then there has been a deluge of releases with many coming out in the past couple months alone. The first was Yesteryear Of The Horse on the European label Penguin, followed by Drive Back To The Judo Arena 1976 (FSVD-055) on Footstomp, Two Ply Budokan on the dvdr label Racket Queen, and Live At Budokan 1976 on Scorpio. The Hammersmith Odeon and Glasgow footage appear on Journey Through The Past on GoodFellas and reviewed on this site by BALK.
Dancing Across The Waters on Reprisal Records (complete with a little boat for a logo) is a direct copy of the Penguin release including the menu page which says "Yesteryear Of The Horse". The bottom line that nothing is gain with this release since Neil Young collectors will have already obtained one of the other titles. If not, then by all means seek this title out because this is essential-to-own footage. The Tokyo video is higher generation with some fuzziness to the colors but the performance is fantastic. The London material is in black-and-white and is more clear than Tokyo. The final portion shows Neil Young busking on the streets of Glasgow with many onlookers enjoying the impromptu performance. Reprisal utilize a cardboard digipack packaging for this release which is very nice but will get damaged easily if not stored properly. |
