REVIEW: |
The
Fillmore late October 1970 Faces shows have been released many times, like
Fillmore West Off Master (IMP-N-021) that covered both shows from the Fillmore
West held on 28th October 1970; some years ago came out Fillmore
West 1970 (OHC 004) that presented them with a slightly better sound where bass
and drums were upfront from the previous release; Marvelous! (Historical
Pirates 010-11) looked like being a copy of the OHC release since it misses the
first part of the introduction where the MC explained why the band will play
instead of the Grease band that didn’t show up. This show had been thought to
have been split in 2 sets, but today it is believed to have been a whole
concert; it was already been released in a beautiful gatefold digipack called
Rock’n Roll Party (Hiwatt). Recently it was released Live At The Fillmore 1970
(London Calling LC 05077 and Audio Vaults 201872) and as part of Growing Up
Fast (WLR Good Boys Asleep GBA 70). This version, however, presents even the
same front cover and title than the Hiwatt release, containing however an
upgraded version where pitch ad phase have been slightly corrected. Moreover,
the intro here is over a minute longer and there is no cut before Maybe I’m
Amazed. The quality of the recording is astounding as it seems to be an
audience one, but could easily been regarded as soundboard. All band members
play well (check Kenney Jones drumming on Too Much Woman a.k.a. I Want To Be
Loved), Ron Wood is fantastic but also the other instrument players are
superlative: Ian McLagan keyboards playing on I Feel So Good is truly
remarkable. Disc Two offers also a nice version of Love In Vain, the Robert
Johnson blues the Stones would release in a live rendition on Get Yer Ya Ya’s
Out in a while but there are also hints of Honky Tonk Women during the long
Gasoline Alley medley. There is also a great jam on Three Buttons Hand Me Down with
great bass playing from Ronnie Lane. After a muscular 10 minutes plus version
of I Feels So Good the concert ends on a strange note with a slow blues, Blues
De Luxe, another track from the Beck Days that is for sure one of the weirdest
way to end a live gig. But this release showcases the Faces greatest moments of
their 2nd U.S 1970 tour with a concert that underlines the best
aspect of the band before the days of booze and excess: they could really play
well then and it is a pity a comprehensive live album has never officially been
released from the early Faces (or late Small Faces).
