REVIEW:

In 1972 Abkco planned a Stones album to follow Hot Rocks, called it Necrophilia and even gave it a catalogue number (AB 4224), the set was to have 15 songs with previously unreleased tracks including alternate takes of Heart Of Stone and Street Fighting Man (called Pay Your Dues), however the acetates labels have 12 October 1972 printed on. The story goes that Andrew Oldham and Allen Klein had a major disagreement over tracks selection, specifically on the song Andrew’s Blues and this set was then replaced by the more conservative More Hot Rocks; however, 9 songs came out in 1975 on Metamorphosis. Only proof cover art and three known acetates exist of this album (the two do not match). Anyway, many of the tracks came out on bootleg in the following years, but a vinyl boot from More Lick Records bearing a slightly different spelled title (Necrophelia) came out in the 80s offering different selections (Family/I Can See It/Jiving Sister Fanny/I’m Going Down/I Don’t Know Why/Stuck Out All Alone/Travelin Man/Dear Doctor /You Got The Silver/Downtown Suzie/Blood Red Wine/Two Train Blues). In 2002 a cd version of the album came out after an acetate version was discovered in Great Britain from VGP. Two tracks are missing from this vinyl version (Think and Good Times) are late additions, not listed on the back cover. Now WLR has decided to offer this album on a 4 LP set, here from the accompanying booklet:

“This is some sort of audio story starting with the unreleased Necrophilia LP and following up to an alternate version of the notorious Metamorphosis album. Included are all of the Necrophilia tracks and a selection of songs that could have been used for it as well. There are also some tracks from the Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra, as these were also used for both Necrophilia and Metamorphosis, in fact the former laid the basis for the latter.” The first disc contains what should have been the original set of tracks on Necrophilia, the second and third ones called Digging A Little Deeper- More Necrophilia and Even More Songs From Beyond The Grave that were found in 2014, while the fourth album called Alternate Metamorphosis has a different version of the 1975 anthology.
