REVIEW: |
This new
release from a No Label presents the 13th June 1976 concert in Nice,
which attracted many fans from Italy as well, since the band didn’t play there
in 1973 (like in France). This concert had always lacked Honky Tonk Women in all
releases, except for Black and Blue in Nice (DAC 094) which is in poor quality though.
This because a bunch of French Hells Angels decided to enter the area in front
of the stage from the side, causing people to protest and starting a fight. The
Stones stopped playing for about 10 minutes and people that were recording ran
away, most of them unable to continue the recording. The available recordings
all had the first song missing, including Live in Nice (VGP 091) with only 14
tracks and Tumbling Nice (Risk Disc 012) the only two silver releases that
featured this concert. Have also to be reported Negrita of Nice which started
with If You Can’t Rock Me-Get Off My Cloud But, Nice 13.6 Stade de l’Ouest 1976
that combined 3 sources to get the most complete document of the gig (but Honky
Tonk Women source was not sure) as well as Nice 13.6.1976. Now this No Label
release said to come from a master tape features the whole show including Intro
and Outro, the latter 2 minutes for the first time. It seems it came from the
same people that provided l’Olympia 2003 IEM; here the sound is good but there
is a strong presence of the audience on about each song with lots of screams,
however the recording does not wave as it did on the other sources. The set
list is the usual one for the European 1976 Tour and is played with confidence
by the band, since they already played their mammoth stops both in London and
Paris and the audience digs it very much. Ron Wood plays his solos during You
Can’t Always Get What You Want less fluidly than the one played in Lyon, but he
gets cheered by fans anyway. This is a good release that fills the gap in many
collectors lists and can be considered an upgrade.
